First look at Star Wars: Rogue One

Rogue One, the inaugural Star Wars anthology movie, has begun principal photography and Lucasfilm released a first look photo of the cast during D23.

Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is directing the story that follows resistance fighters who have united to steal the plans to the Empire's dreaded Death Star.

“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) leads the ensemble. Alexandre Desplat is the composer, but John Williams' familiar themes are bound to be referenced.

Rogue One is due in cinemas December 2016.

Tom Baker to voice a character in Star Wars

An actor, synonymous with playing one of my childhood heroes, is about to make his debut in a galaxy far, far away...

Tom Baker, famous for his portrayal of Doctor Who's fourth incarnation, made a cryptic reference to appearing in Star Wars during the Day of the Doctors convention in Slough. That's according to Sci-Fi Fantasy Network.

“I’m going to be in this new Star Wars thing, you know?” Tom told eager fans as he signed autographs. “I’m going down to record some voices for this new character they’ve created for me, very soon.”

Could the veteran actor be recording a part for The Force Awakens, Star Wars Rebels or Rogue One? If - and that's a big if - it's The Force Awakens, December is going to be very special indeed.

It's worth noting that another former Doctor Who, David Tennant, has appeared in the Star Wars franchise. Tennant voiced Huyang, earning himself an Emmy Award, in The Clone Wars.

Feel free to speculate in the comments below.

HBO's chilling teaser for Westworld

HBO revisits seminal sci-fi western Westworld (1973) in its upcoming television series executive produced by JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan. Here's a chilling first look that pays homage to Michael Crichton's original dysfunctional theme park. An idea Crichton would return to in Jurassic Park.

HBO describes Westworld as "a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin." The series stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Simon Quarterman, and Angela Sarafyan, and will air in 2016.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga steelbooks on Blu-ray

There was a time when Star Wars was re-released for the home video market on an almost annual basis. Lost count how many editions I've owned over the years and stopped when the saga bowed on Blu-ray disc! Subsequently switching to streaming services such as Netflix and NOW TV in preference to those silver platters. NOW TV is showing the Star Wars saga on demand from this weekend.

Now Disney is releasing the complete saga, in the wake of the digital collection, on limited edition steelbook Blu-ray disc this November. These are not the original theatrical releases, but are based on the special editions. So, if you want to see Han shoot first, these aren't the editions you're looking for.

The limited edition set is released on 9th November prior to The Force Awakens this December.

Pilot the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars Battlefront

EA has unveiled a new mode for the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront and knocked it out of the park!

"Fighter Squadron will put you inside the cockpit of some of the most memorable vehicles ever seen in the Star Wars galaxy," said Battlefront senior producer Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir at Gamescom.

The dizzying dogfights evoke fond memories of playing Rogue Squadron on Nintendo's GameCube.

Fighter Squadron mode stays true to the original Star Wars films. "We want to give fans the thrill of living out their Star Wars battle fantasies in a game that is authentic, visually stunning and fun," said Ingvarsdottir.

Mark Hamill's snarky Star Wars autographs

Imgr user raggedrabbit has posted a number of Star Wars collector cards, signed by Mark Hamill, which have gone viral.

The actor is best known for playing farmboy orphan Luke Skywalker in cinema's, arguably, most popular space opera, Star Wars. A role he'll reprise in JJ Abrams' The Force Awakens, set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, this December.

Hamill's also feted for his lauded portrayal of The Joker in the transmedia DC Universe (DCU) and was recently seen as The Trickster in The CW's The Flash.

You can view the full, hilarious, gallery of autographs here.
