Secret Invasion has Winter Soldier vibes

Marvel Studios has dropped an official trailer for Secret Invasion on Disney+.

A brief plot synopsis was released alongside the trailer, which reads:

"In Marvel Studios’ new series Secret Invasion, set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together, they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity."

Who do you trust? A sense of suffocating paranoia, a theme explored in Star Trek: Picard's third and final season on Paramount+, has not been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, my interest in the MCU on the big screen has waned (like it has for other fans). WandaVision, Loki, Moon Knight and the one-shot specials have been excellent on Disney+. However, I welcome Disney's decision to scale back on too many releases going forward.

Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) joins the MCU in a Disney+ series starring Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Olivia Colman.

Secret Invasion premieres exclusively on Disney+ on the 21st of June.

Wakanda Forever honours Chadwick Boseman

During San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), Disney dropped a teaser trailer for Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

This serves as a poignant tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman who personified the character of Black Panther from the moment he first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Captain America: Civil War.

Boseman's iconic role touched myriad lives around the world and leaves a lasting legacy.

Wakanda forever! 'Nuff said!

Battle of the exes in Thor: Love and Thunder

On Monday, Disney dropped an official trailer for Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder.

Director Taika Waititi's (Jojo Rabbit) follow-up to his Thor: Ragnarok looks a lot of fun, with Natalie Portman (Thor: The Dark World) reprising the role of Jane Foster opposite Chris Hemsworth as the titular Avenger, and is in cinemas on 8th July.

Are you looking forward to Thor: Love and Thunder? What was your reaction to the trailer? Let me know in the comments below.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is coming home

On Wednesday, Sony Pictures announced Spider-Man: No Way Home is coming home digitally this March.

A popular internet meme based on the sixties animated Spider-Man series was recreated featuring Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

Nick Smith raved about the blockbusting movie in his spoiler-free review. Soon fans (myself included) will be able to watch it digitally on 22nd March and on 4K UHD Blu-ray on 4th April. No news on when it'll premiere on Netflix.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is available to pre-order (affiliate link).

Doctor Strange shatters Super Bowl

To the disappointment of many Star Wars fans (myself included), Lucasfilm was a no-show during Super Bowl LVI. Perhaps the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer is being held back for Star Wars Day?

Stablemate Marvel Studios stepped up with new trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Moon Knight. The former seemingly confirms a connection with Marvel Studios' What If...? and calls back to director Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead series.

The Thanos Blip continues to have consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

“The multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little,” says Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). “It was the only way… But I never meant for any of this to happen.”

Doctor Strange 2 follows mind-bending events in WandaVision, Loki, What If...? and Spider-Man: No Way Home by introducing Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Doctor Strange battle evil doppelgängers as the fate of the multiverse lies in the balance.

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is exclusively in cinemas on 6th May.

What Easter eggs did you spot in the Super Bowl trailer? Let me know in the comments below.

Make Mine Spider-Man

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a box office behemoth and I can't wait to see the beloved web-slinger's latest adventure when it debuts on Netflix.

Nick Smith, our resident US-based comic book guru, enters a multiverse of Marvel's making.

Guest post by Nick Smith

2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took a charming swing at celebrating Spidey’s history, with turns from Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir and even Peter Porker. The animated feature was a joy to watch and a deserved hit. But was a live-action multiverse adventure feasible, or would it be a futile exercise in fan pandering? Fortunately, the former is true.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the most accomplished and heart-warming Marvel movies so far.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, J. Jonah Jameson (J. K. Simmons) has outed 17-year-old Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as – gasp! – the vigilante super-hero Spider-Man. This rotten revelation adversely affects the lives of Peter, his besties Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) and his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). The only person who seems to come out smelling of roses is Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), who proclaims himself Peter’s real BFF and has a book out to prove it.

Peter goes to fellow Avenger Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. Strange casts a spell to help the world forget Spider-Man’s alias. Unfortunately, the spell goes wrong and worlds collide as other super-powered characters, who know his true identity, are pulled from alternate Earths.

DC does multiple worlds well, at least on TV; The CW’s shows have already schooled modern audiences on multiverses and different variations of characters. Many made charming cameos in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, from 1960s Robin (Burt Ward) to the current movie Flash (Ezra Miller) meeting his TV equal (Grant Gustin).

It’s a hard act to follow, but Marvel does it in its hyper-real, epic style that tugs at the heartstrings and leaves you wanting more. Amidst the action and character-based comedy, there are strong themes of loyalty and redemption. To say who gets redeemed would spoil this movie’s surprises – let’s just say some of the pay-offs are decades in the making.

All the Tom Holland Spider-Man films have been satisfying but this one respects its legacy by referring to previous entries in the saga, complete with music cues, familiar phrases (‘with great power…’) and several sinister villains.

Although the story presupposes knowledge of Avengers and Spider-Man lore, that’s balanced with characters popping into our world and being surprised – magic exists here? There’s a guy who turns green? – giving newbies a chance to relate to the far-fetched drama.

The actors help to sell the fairytale aspects of the plot as well as the more everyday drama (getting into college, actions having consequences). Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) gets more charismatic with each of his films. Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) are perfect supporting players. Alfred Molina picks up his sympathetic portrayal of Doc Ock, last seen in 2004’s Spiderman 2, as if he never left it. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange provides a perfect wry remedy for Peter Parker’s teenage turmoil.

We’ve seen Doctor Strange’s eye-bending, twisted planes of existence before but a crack between dimensions opens new realms of possibility. It would be fantastic to see the Negative Zone or Jack Kirby starfields in full effect.

There’s no dispute that DC lay the multidimensional groundwork for contemporary viewers to accept different takes on favourite characters and stories. Nevertheless, since Spider-Man: No Way Home captures the humanity and down-to-earth concerns of its characters – the heroes and villains – there’s no contest. Marvel does it better.

Spidey's billion-dollar Betwixmas

Betwixmas brings Spider-Man: No Way Home a billion-dollar bonanza in theatres for Sony Pictures!

It's the first movie to reach that box office milestone since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concluded George Lucas' 9-part space opera, which was the last movie I saw before the pandemic, in 2019.

Whilst I've had the booster vaccine, I remain reluctant to venture into the cinema due to health reasons. So, in place of a press screener, Nick Smith, our resident US-based stellar scribe, will be reviewing Spidey's latest and greatest at his local multiplex. I'll wait to see it on Netflix (hopefully on an LG OLED) in 2022.

Hawkeye finale teases big boss

It's Christmas week and Marvel Studios teases the Hawkeye season finale exclusively on Disney+ this Wednesday. There are spoilers. So, look away now if you'd rather not have your presents opened for you before the big day.

As many fans (myself included) had speculated. Vincent D'Onofrio is reprising the iconic role of Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin (Daredevil) in Hawkeye on Disney+.

Fisk can be seen photographed with Kate Bishop's (Hailee Steinfeld) mother, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga). Is Eleanor the big bad? After the emotional rollercoaster ride of last week's episode, following the fallout from the battle between Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Kate, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), anything is possible.

New episodes of Marvel Studios' Hawkeye premiere every Wednesday exclusively on Disney+.

Spider-Man's box office bite

Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tom Holland as the titular web-crawler, opened to a historic $587.2 million weekend box office during the pandemic.

“This weekend’s historic ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” says Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO.

Hawkeye hits the mark

Marvel Studios' Hawkeye is a tonic and self-aware enough to take satirical shots (no pun intended) at itself and the wider Walt Disney empire when it debuted with a double-dose of heroic holiday cheer on Disney+ this Thanksgiving.

Hawkeye is ostensibly Avengers: A Christmas Carol and I'm here for it.

Hailee Steinfeld (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Kate Bishop is inspired casting! The chemistry between her and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) is comedic dynamite.

Marvel Studios' WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...? and now Hawkeye have been a delight amid an ongoing global pandemic. Furthermore, I will be renewing Disney+. Make Mine Marvel.

New episodes of Marvel Studios' Hawkeye premiere every Wednesday exclusively on Disney+.

Spider-Man can Scooby-Doo this!

With assistance from Marvel Studios, Sony's Spider-Man Universe is about to expand exponentially if Spider-Man: No Way Home has anything to do with it.

An official trailer dropped early on Wednesday with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) making an hilarious reference to Scooby-Doo.

Read the official synopsis:

"For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse."

There have been high-profile spoilers leaked. However, this blog has a proud tradition of not opening other people's presents without warning.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, starring Tom Holland as the titular web-slinger, swings into UK cinemas on 15th December with tickets going on sale on 29th November AKA Spider-Monday. It's the perfect holiday gift for fans (myself included).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: No Way Home debut first on Netflix for those who are still reluctant to venture into a cinema (due to the ongoing pandemic) in 2022.

Avengers-level threat this Thanksgiving

"It's the most wonderful time of the year..." Marvel Studios' Hawkeye premieres this Thanksgiving on Disney+ and there's a new look at the upcoming live-action spin-off series ahead of Disney+ Day.

This could be the most festive fun since Iron Man 3. Jeremy Renner reprises his role as Hawkeye, who teams up with another well-known archer from Marvel Comics, Kate Bishop, played by Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Dickinson).

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW), Steinfeld and executive producer Trinh Tran shared their thoughts on the upcoming series. Steinfeld said, "Diving into all the information out there on Kate Bishop felt like a dream." She's stoked to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). "It's very, very exciting to be in the MCU at all. I still haven't been able to get over that."

Tran confirms Hawkeye takes inspiration from the acclaimed Fraction/Aja comic book series:

"The Fraction/Aja style and tone is what we were really gravitating towards. Once they encounter each other and go off on this journey together, there's so much they can bounce off each other."

Unwrap the first two episodes of Hawkeye exclusively on Disney+ on 24th November.

Marvel's holiday gifts come with a bow

Marvel Studios has been crushing it in 2021 with its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) spin-off series on Disney+. From WandaVision to What If...?, it's been unmissable character-driven viewing for all true believers (myself included).

On Monday, Disney+ dropped some early holiday cheer with an official teaser trailer for Marvel Studios' Hawkeye.

Read the official synopsis:

"Disney+ and Marvel Studios invite you on an unexpected holiday getaway, unwrapping a brand-new teaser trailer and poster today for “Hawkeye,” a new series set in post-blip New York City. Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit."

Jeremy Renner reprises his role as Hawkeye, who teams up with another well-known archer from Marvel Comics, Kate Bishop, played by Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee).

Renner described Steinfeld's character to Entertainment Weekly (EW) by saying, “[Kate is] a 22-year-old kid and she’s a big Hawkeye fan. She has a wonderfully annoying and equally charming manner about her, because she’s such a fangirl of Hawkeye. The relationship grows from that, but the biggest problem for Clint is Kate Bishop and the onslaught of problems that she brings into his life.”

The trappings of the holiday season certainly allow for comparisons with MCU stablemate Iron Man 3 and Die Hard and Home Alone (both available on Star on Disney+). Hawkeye is rumoured to tie into Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Hawkeye debuts in time for Thanksgiving on Disney+ on 24th November.

Looking forward to Marvel Studios' Hawkeye? Let me know in the comments below.

Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser

Following a leak on social media on Sunday, Marvel Studios has dropped a teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it's all kinds of awesome.

From Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) to a cackling Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), the multiverse, unleased in Loki, threatens to alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) status quo forever.

“It was wonderful,” Alfred Molina told Variety in April. “It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly dodgy lower back.”

There's no official confirmation regarding Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising the role of Spider-Man alongside Tom Holland in the MCU. But I like fun surprises, especially at Christmas, don't you?

Holland's Spider-Man was memorably introduced in Captain America: Civil War and mentored by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Don't get me started on their respective goodbyes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Welp! However, in the wake of J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) exposing Spider-Man's true identity in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker goes in search of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a memory-erasing spell with devastating consequences.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into cinemas on 17th December. It's the perfect holiday gift for all true believers (myself included). Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: No Way Home debut first on Netflix for those who are still reluctant to venture into a cinema (due to the ongoing pandemic) in 2022.

As with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony has used the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer to promote PlayStation 5 (PS5) wireless controllers. Jarring but understandable marketing as Marvel's Spider-Man video game franchise is a console exclusive.

Why the Eternals didn't fight Thanos

Marvel Studios has dropped the second and final trailer for Eternals from Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland). It explains why they didn't help the Avengers in their fight against Thanos.

Here's the official synopsis:

"The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations. They have hidden themselves for thousands of years, must re-unite to protect Earth from their enemies, the Deviants."

"I'm a big fan of the MCU. So when they come knocking it's very exciting," Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), who plays Dane Whitman AKA Black Knight, told Sirius XM. "The character, I won't go into why he interests me, because it's more than my life is worth to tell you. But what did interest me about that piece was that it as Chloe Zhao directing. I met her and spoke with her and was so impressed by her. The cast was sort of phenomenal and wide-ranging and diverse. It just looked like they were doing something really different with this movie. I can't tell you much about it but we filmed it pre-pandemic. And it's coming out finally, it was sort of frustrating that it got pushed back so much. But now I'll be going on and doing some press for that soon and it's really exciting."

In related news. Spoiler for the second episode of What If...? on Disney+. Josh Brolin reprises the role of Thanos in a poignant instalment starring the late Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa's Star-Lord.

Eternals will be in cinemas on 5th November.

Marvel Studios’ What If…? this Wednesday

The first season of Loki may have ended but Marvel Studios' first animated spin-off series, What If...?, debuts this Wednesday on Disney+.

How does What If...? tie into the multiverse of infinite possibilities revealed in Loki. TheWrap put this to head writer A.C. Bradley.

“Marvel always has plans, whether or not anyone actually knows what those are and how often they change is anyone’s guess. I have no idea to be honest with you,” she said. “Hopefully, it will tie into the bigger picture more and more as the Marvel Universe expands.”

New episodes of Marvel Studios' What If...? premiere every Wednesday exclusively on Disney+.

Enter the multiverse in Marvel Studios' What If...?

Marvel Studios has released an official trailer for What If...?, its first-ever animated series for Disney+.

The impressive voice cast includes Hayley Atwell as Captain Peggy Carter, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Samuel L. It's especially poignant that fans (myself included) get to hear the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa.

In related news. Marvel Studios' Black Widow is now in cinemas and available exclusively on Disney+ with Premier Access.

During the time heist in Avengers: Endgame, this younger Loki stole the Tesseract and escaped only to be captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Marvel Comics' answer to Doctor Who's Time Lords...

The six-part spin-off series begins today exclusively on Disney+. New episodes will drop every Wednesday.
