The Acolyte star performs Star Wars theme

Music plays an integral role in the Star Wars story. Amandla Stenberg will soon be seen in The Acolyte on Disney+.

Stenberg is a self-confessed Star Wars fan and an accomplished violinist. She has always wanted to perform music from Star Wars on her grandfather's violin, and the Oscar-winning composer John Williams wrote a solo arrangement for Stenberg.

Lucasfilm has released a featurette focussing on Stenberg's recording session at the John Williams Music Building.

The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The Acolyte, the latest Star Wars live-action spin-off series, debuts exclusively on Disney+ on 4th June.

Agatha All Along

Marvel Studios brilliantly teased the upcoming WandaVision spin-off series starring Kathryn Hahn as the titular witch, Agatha Harkness, on Disney+.

Coven of Chaos, Agnes of Westview, Agatha: The Darkhold Diaries and Agatha: House of Harkness were all teased as titles on social media.

It was Agatha All Along. Well played, Marvel Studios!

WandaVision was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) spin-off series on Disney+ with spellbinding performances from Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision) and Hahn. Agatha All Along, the satirical theme song performed by Hahn herself, spawned countless memes and topped the iTunes charts during the pandemic.

Like X-Men '97, Agatha All Along will see Marvel Studios continue to pivot away from the notion that audiences must watch all the MCU things, which felt like too much homework.

“There was a lot of pressure post-‘Avengers: Endgame’ on the public to feel obligated to watch absolutely everything in order to watch anything,” says Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation. “Part of the rebranding was a signal to the general audience that we’re creating a lot of options, and you can follow your tastes within this brand. Some will be more comedic, some will be more dramatic, some will be animated, some will be live-action. Marvel is more than just one thing — it is actually many different genres that just happened to coexist in a single narrative.”

Fellow Doctor Who fans will be amused to know Russell T Davies named Jack Harkness after Agatha. Of course, the beloved BBC sci-fi series is now on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland.

Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along will premiere on 18th September on Disney+.

Are you looking forward to Agatha All Along? Let me know in the comments below.

Doctor Who: The Devil’s Chord

Space Babies heralded the Disney era of Doctor Who with a double bill including The Devil's Chord, and Andrew Lewin and I would like to invite our readers to discuss all things Whovian on The WELL.

Nick Smith, after appearing on The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS podcast, returns to a not-so-swinging sixties and meets a glum Fab Four.

Guest post by Nick Smith

The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) returns to earth for his second adventure of this year, The Devil’s Chord.

After a visit to a baby-making space station, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) has spent some time in the present before asking to go back in time to meet the Beatles. Whether she is successful or not is debatable.

It’s always fun to see a human companion exploring the past, from Martha Jones' (Freema Agyeman) encounter with the Bard in The Shakespeare Code to Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) helping to stoke The Fires of Pompeii. Inevitably, though, wherever the TARDIS goes, there’s trouble in store.

In 1963, a chaotic god has stolen music like an evil governmental entity removing arts education from schools. How could such a fiendish (yet cost-efficient) scheme possibly effect our world? Showrunner and scriptwriter Russell T Davies counts the ways, which include loneliness, loss of empathy and, worst of all, no Love Me Do from the Fab Four!

Jinkx Monsoon is Maestro, the colourful meanie who has turned ‘60s London into a no-singing, no-dancing homage to Footloose. Like Kevin Bacon in that movie, the Doctor and Ruby are willing to break the rules to draw Maestro out. If you like your villains to chew scenery with the insatiability of a termite at a wood carving convention, Maestro is for you. Luckily, Ruby can play beautiful piano music that sounds uncannily like a Murray Gold composition, and the Doctor can twist like he did last Christmas. Gold’s music has saved many a soul from the blues, and his music is one of the strongest elements in this episode.

Also strong: the lighting and visuals, showing that spending a little more time - and splashing more cash - on this season is paying off. There are some bum notes; the Beatles actors don’t look anything like the group, so the Doctor and Ruby might as well have gone to see the Rutles. Towards the end of the story, the John Lennon not-a-like appears from nowhere to help the Doctor, just like the last episode’s space babies with their flamethrower.

Davies has a habit of giving characters barely justified things to do because the plot requires it, rather than following them in parallel so we can believe what they’re doing is innate. Here, we get a Lennon Ex Machina sauntering up and plonking on a piano, which helps combat Maestro. Contrived to be sure, although it is established early on that music is in his heart somewhere, aching to get out.

Physical musical notes float in the air through a major piece of the story. They are not all necessary, becoming as indulgent as Maestro’s wardrobe. As with the talking babies in the previous story, just because production company Bad Wolf Studios can afford to go to town with CGI, that doesn’t always mean that it should.

A musical number is tacked onto the end of the story after the Doctor breaks the fourth wall. It’s not the first time he’s done this, and the charismatic Gatwa makes it palatable. The suggestion is that anything goes in this magical new version of Doctor Who. But it’s worth bearing in mind that without those grumpy old guardians of science fiction, logic and structure, it becomes harder to believe in or care about the story or worry about the Doctor. If he can get out of trouble with a song and a dance, the scrutiny shifts from the coherence of the storytelling to the quality of the choreography.

Since razzmatazz and rationality aren’t mutually exclusive, hopefully, this won’t be the last time the Doctor dances. This certainly isn’t his first brush with music – we have to go all the way back to 1966’s The Gunfighters for that.

The Devil’s Chord feels fresh, with eye-popping dashes of colour and some very funny moments. It’s refreshing after the darker moments of former showrunners Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. Davies is obviously enjoying the carte blanche he’s been given on the show, which continues to surprise and excite audiences two decades after he jump-started the TARDIS.

Unlike Space Babies, The Devil’s Chord has many layers worth tuning into, and it’s undoubtedly a story that will improve with more groovy viewings.

New episodes of Doctor Who stream every Friday on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland and every Saturday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Season one is available for pre-order (affiliate link).

Tomb Raider from Fleabag creator

An animated Tomb Raider series, starring Hayley Atwell (Mission Impossible), is currently in production for Netflix. Prime Video has confirmed a live-action series from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

“If I could tell my teenage self that this was happening, I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all," said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Waller-Bridge is no stranger to archaeological adventures after appearing in Indiana Jones.

“I’m so happy to announce that we have ordered the epic, globetrotting series Tomb Raider from the incredibly gifted Emmy-award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the team at Crystal Dynamics,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “Fans and newcomers can look forward to exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character.”

The recent Fallout adaptation on Prime Video is stunning. So, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Tomb Raider will stream exclusively on Prime Video (affiliate link).

Doctor Who: Space Babies

The Disney era of Doctor Who begins with a double episode on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. You can read my initial impressions here.

Following on from The Church on Ruby Road, Nick Smith, our US-based veteran Whovian, discovers a space station full of Jelly Babies, I mean Space Babies.

Guest post by Nick Smith

Babies are adorable, aren’t they? As a human race with an inkling of interest in our survival, we are programmed to love them and find them fascinating. But can a gag about babies running a space station sustain an episode of Doctor Who? Yes, it can.

Ah, Doctor Who, the 61-year-old sci-fi series that can be anything: a historical drama, a dystopian morality tale, a horror story, a musical, or a gross-out comedy. Space Babies, the first regular episode of season one, is the latter. It will appeal primarily to children who enjoy snotty comedy; for adults, there is an on-the-nose social commentary about pro-life politics, a flaming hot topic in the home country of Disney+.

The scatological humour is reminiscent of kid-friendly, fun ideas like the Slitheen in showrunner Russell T Davies’ first season of Doctor Who (billed as series one. Yes, the new episodes are being marketed as season one. Stay with me, it’s a time travel show).

Space Babies develops a manifesto that Davies initiated in last year’s Children in Need skit, Destination: Skaro. His credo, don’t take this episodic fantasy too seriously, can be liberating. It’s understandable; Davies just wants to have fun, taking the crayon box of Doctor Who’s past and adding new colours by sublimating the science and incorporating concepts of myth and magic. If classic Doctor Who can include bizarre ideas like a cosmic toymaker or a psychotic Bertie Bassett, why not pop in some talking babies and a mucus monster?

Davies and director Julie Anne Robinson focus on the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, with vivid closeups to help imprint him on viewers like the first face a baby sees. Gatwa is a good actor, handling action, comedy, tons of exposition (about his character’s past, the TARDIS, and the space station he materializes in), and a potentially annoying habit of saying ‘space’ over and over. In Gatwa’s hands – or mouth – every scene is believable and entertaining.

The babies speak with uncanny lip movements (telepathy would have been less distracting) and there’s at least one glitch in the footage as Robinson gets the babies to do what they have to do to move the story forward. But since the Fifteenth Doctor’s era is in its infancy, these little hiccups can be forgiven.

The monster design is fascinating, and the homage to Alien is clever, subverting what we expect to happen, as all the best tributes do.

Best of all, the Doctor and his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), run up and down lots of corridors; it’s good to see that no matter how glossy, expensive and revamped Doctor Who gets, the tropes remain the same.

New episodes of Doctor Who stream every Friday on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland and every Saturday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Season one is available for pre-order (affiliate link).

Doctor Who on The WELL

So you might have noticed that the new series of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) starts this weekend on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and of course globally on Disney+. There’s been the odd mention of it on the news as well as some trailers, posters and interviews – all very understated. A budget of $100 million can only go so far.

In the past, Andrew Lewin (of Taking the Short View) and I have collaborated on features and reviews about the BBC's beloved long-running sci-fi series.

However, things went dark during the pandemic - aside from celebrating the Doctor Who BBC Centenary special: The Power of the Doctor.

We’re keen to revive the tradition (after I searched for Andrew across all of space and time - messaged him on Messenger), and to step it up a bit. Rather than standalone features, we’re setting up a new community to run alongside the broadcast/streaming of the new season in May and June, and hope that some of our readers will come over and try it out for themselves.

It’s hosted on The WELL, one of the world’s original and longest-lasting online communities. It’s a subscription-based membership site, but non-members can read our public discussion of all things Doctor Who over the next few weeks by going to this link!

You can send any questions and comments to the moderator here, but if you want to participate directly or access the full Whovians forum then you’ll need to sign up for an introductory membership at The WELL.

Alternatively, we also have some gift invites (courtesy of The WELL) that we can offer that will give you a free three-month trial which will do the trick. Contact Andrew Lewin directly here with a few words about yourself and your interest in Doctor Who, and mention that you saw the offer here on Generation Star Wars.

We hope to see you there, but either way – enjoy the new season of Doctor Who!

Darth Jar Jar rises in LEGO Star Wars

This year is the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and LEGO Star Wars.

After decades of fan speculation, Darth Jar Jar is a thing. Lucasfilm has dropped a teaser trailer for LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy on Disney+.

Read the official synopsis:

"In LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, the entire Star Wars Galaxy gets completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together."

The talented voice cast features Gaten Matarazzo (Sig Greebling), Tony Revolori (Dev Greebling), Bobby Moynihan (Jedi Bob), Marsai Martin (Yesi Scala), Michael Cusack (Servo), Ahmed Best (Darth Jar Jar), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker).

The animated special showcases the longtime team-up of Lucasfilm and Danish toy manufacturing company, The LEGO Group. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been twenty-five years since the ground-breaking collaboration between Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group began,” says executive producer James Waugh. “In that time, LEGO Star Wars has given our fans the unique power to unlock their imaginations and play with the galaxy’s elements in any way they can conceive… and build. It’s with that playful spirit in mind that we set out to 'Rebuild the Galaxy' like never before. Tapping into the comedic genius of Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, two of the most talented comedy writers I’ve had the fortune of working with, we’ve mixed and matched LEGO sets to snap together Imperial X-fighters, Rebel TIE-wings, and yes, even Darth Jar Jar. This four-piece special is a celebration of all things Star Wars, LEGO, and the incredible explorations that can only happen when these two amazing brands come together.”

Discover LEGO Star Wars on LEGO AU, CA, UK and US (affiliate links).

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy streams exclusively on 13th September on Disney+.

Doctor Who's TARDIS materialises at Disneyland

Doctor Who returns with a two-episode premiere next Friday on Disney+ and the TARDIS has materialised at Disneyland Resort ahead of the new series starring Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday). Gatwa and Gibson recently appeared on Good Morning America (GMA).

The BBC and Disney have a storied history. I vividly remember Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor presenting Disney Time ending in a link to Terror of the Zygons.

With the creative partnership between the BBC and Disney, the TARDIS doors have been opened for future theme park collaborations.

Doctor Who season one premieres 11th May on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and 10th May on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. That's so timey-wimey.

Alien bursts back on Alien Day

It's Alien Day officially celebrating all things xenomorph on LV-426.

The original Alien is back on the big screen and Alien: Romulus arrives in August.

Nick Smith, our resident US-based bug hunter, grabs an M41-A Pulse Rifle, flameflower and motion tracker. Stay frosty and watch out for dark corners...

Guest post by Nick Smith

In the caves, in the infancy of our race, we were warned by our parents to be cautious of the dark, venomous beasts that slithered and hissed in the night. One bite from a slug with teeth or a spray of acid blood from a horned lizard could incapacitate us, and spell our doom.

Now we are civilized, sophisticated, kings and queens of our concrete jungle. But the caution remains, the fear that one wrong turn in a dark alley will lead to an encounter with a harmful creature, something unfathomably alien.

H.R. Giger, along with director Ridley Scott and his team, tapped into these primal fears in the 1979 movie Alien, incorporating body horror, carnality, believable and likeable characters, and a lived-in environment.

James Cameron expanded the mythos in 1986 with Aliens, placing gung-ho action heroes in an untenable horror movie scenario. This double cinematic whammy contained enough richness and depth to resonate today, resulting in spin-offs in numerous media that don’t feel like soulless cash grabs worthy of the franchise’s fictional, heartless Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

The most-anticipated new part of this long-running saga is Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez and starring Cailee Spaeny (Civil War and Pacific Rim: Uprising). Set between the first two classic films, Romulus is apparently a return to Alien’s roots; Álvarez’s track record (2013’s Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) is impressively dark, tense, and creepy.

Filming of an FX TV series began in early 2024 in Bangkok; this earth-set drama has multiple seasons planned, focusing on corporate executives and their plans to exploit the xenomorphs. Fargo’s Noah Hawley is the creator and executive producer, and the cast includes Timothy Olyphant (The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett). While an Alien TV series was first proposed to ABC in 1980, this is the first small screen live-action iteration to reach production. The series should arrive on Hulu on Disney+ in 2025.

Marvel Comics has published consistently readable Alien mini-series over the past few years, including Thaw and Descendant. If you like your stories bleak and your characters ruthless, these are the comics for you. Just don’t get too attached to any of the heroes as they are graphically dispatched on the icy moon LV-695.

Aliens: What if…?, co-written by Paul Reiser (Stranger Things), wonders what would happen if Reiser’s slimy character Carter Burke survived the second movie, with entertaining results. There’s also Alien: Black, White & Blood, an experiment in minimalism that highlights the aliens’ horrible beauty.

Beauty or beasts, the xenomorphs will be around for years to come, lurking in ducting, stalking their way down shadowed metal corridors, always giving us something to scream about.

How are you celebrating Alien Day? Let me know in the comments below.

Playmates’ Power Rangers

Hasbro has previously inked co-branded deals with Mattel and McFarlane Toys. Now Playmates Toys is producing licensed Power Rangers products beginning in 2025.

“We are honored to work with Hasbro on the reimagination of this iconic franchise’s toy line for long-time fans and a new generation of children. Playmates and Hasbro speak the same toy language and share a passion for POWER RANGERS, a multi-generational phenomenon that has stood the test of time,” said Karl Aaronian, Playmates’ SVP of Marketing.

The fan-favourite live-action superhero franchise has been relatively dormant outside the adult collector market. In the early nineties, Power Rangers merchandise ruled toy aisles causing shopping chaos for families at Christmas.

"Playmates’ ability to interpret character-based storytelling in highly detailed, innovative, and affordable products has revitalized several iconic brands, they are the perfect fit to fully expand the POWER RANGERS franchise,” said Casey Collins, President of Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro. “While we’ll continue to provide oversight and direction on future POWER RANGERS product ranges, Playmates will leverage its action figure and accessory design, development and marketing expertise to create an entirely new play and collecting experience for fans of all ages. With two powerhouse companies coming together to support a powerhouse brand, the potential is limitless!”

For All Mankind spin-off Star City

For All Mankind, an alternate reality sci-fi series created by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), has been renewed for a fifth season and a spin-off series has been announced.

Star City.

“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said executive producers Wolpert and Nedivi. “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race. We could not be more excited to continue building out the alternate history universe of ‘For All Mankind’ with our partners at Apple and Sony.”

Read the description of Star City:

"A robust expansion of the “For All Mankind” universe, “Star City” is a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward."

The first four seasons of For All Mankind are now available to stream on Apple TV+.

Fallout renewed

Fallout is a spectacular success on Prime Video. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi series has been renewed for a second season.

Okey-dokey!

Fallout was originally announced in 2020 during the pandemic and has exceeded all expectations.

The live-action adaptation of Bethesda's video game franchise from the showrunners of Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, is prestige television on par with HBO's The Last of Us. Like The Last of Us, viewers do not have to have prior knowledge of the Fallout games, but fans (myself included) can have fun spotting all the Easter eggs. The amazing Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) looks like a live-action Battle Angel Alita!

However, unlike The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, all episodes of Fallout dropped on Prime Video on 11th April. I refuse to binge-watch and wish to savour the story weekly. This is an era of curated content and it's great that audiences can decide on how and when they consume media.

In related news. Following the release of the Fallout live-action series, Fallout 4 is the best-selling video game in Europe. I haven’t played Fallout 4 since the heyday of the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Somehow Codsworth, a robot butler, was MIA in the wasteland and my character, named Sarah Jane Smith in homage to the fan-favourite Doctor Who companion, failed to find him in shades of losing Lydia in Skyrim. Fallout 4 is getting a next-gen update next week and I’ll begin a new playthrough on Xbox Game Pass.

Fallout is streaming exclusively on Prime Video (affiliate link).

Have you watched Fallout on Prime Video? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Transformers One is an origin story

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Transformers. To celebrate, Paramount Pictures has released an official trailer for Transformers One.

"TRANSFORMERS ONE is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever."

In the first-ever fully CG-animated Transformers movie, Transformers One features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax), Brian Tyree Henry (D-16), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Keegan-Michael Key (B-127), Steve Buscemi with Laurence Fishburne and Jon Hamm.

In 1986, Transformers: The Movie traumatised a generation of fans (myself included) with the death of Optimus Prime. Will history repeat itself in Transformers One?

Transformers One is only in cinemas on 20th September.

LEGO Star Wars Day

LEGO Star Wars celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and there are exciting new sets for May the Fourth.

“May the 4th be with all LEGO Star Wars fans! We are excited to continue our 25th anniversary celebration with an exciting line-up of new sets, events, and experiences for fans to enjoy. I’m looking forward to seeing how fans choose to celebrate all things LEGO Star Wars on this iconic day around the world,” said Mike Ilacqua, Head of Product, LEGO Star Wars products at the LEGO Group.

A new LEGO Star Wars UCS TIE Interceptor has been announced for fans (myself included) to recreate the Battle of Endor from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

“Finally making the UCS TIE Interceptor again after so many years was so exciting for me," said Henrik Andersen, design master at the LEGO Group. "Compared to the last time I designed [it], I was now able to create a close-to-perfect replica of the movie prop. It's always been one of my favourite Star Wars ships.”

Throughout 2024, the LEGO Star Wars team plans to celebrate with fans front and centre of it all.

LEGO Star Wars content is coming to LEGO Fortnite.

There's still time to submit an entry to the LEGO Star Wars 25-second film festival.

From May 1st to 5th, LEGO Star Wars fans will receive all three gift with purchases when purchasing the new LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor: including the Battle of Yavin collectable depicting Darth Vader’s cockpit view, the Trade Federation Troop Carrier set commemorating the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and the AAT building set while stocks last.

In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself."

The sci-fi thriller stars Joel Edgerton (Star Wars) and Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind). Like His Dark Materials, the multiverse theme profoundly resonates. What if I hadn't had a life-changing head injury in primary school, what if I hadn't survived?

Dark Matter is exclusively on Apple TV+ on 8th May.

Star Wars Outlaws this August

Ubisoft has released an official story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws.

The upcoming single-player open-world Star Wars video game from Massive Entertainment, set between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC on 30th August.

As much as I'm excited about Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's strategy of paywalling content behind season passes means I won't be playing on day one. As with the excellent Assassin's Creed Odyssey, I'll wait for a post-launch sale.

Pre-order Star Wars Outlaws from Amazon (affiliate link).

Are you looking forward to Star Wars Outlaws? What are your thoughts on the story trailer? Let me know in the comments below.

She has lived her entire life inside a subterranean vault, where every need and want has been satisfied while generations and generations await the day when it is safe to surface. Star Trek: Section 31 first look

Ahead of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery, Paramount+ has teased Section 31, following a Starfleet black ops organisation, in Variety.

Originally announced in 2019, the Star Trek spin-off series starring Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) has been adapted into a feature-length straight-to-streaming movie. Yeoh reprises the duplicitous Philippa Georgiou from the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Section 31 is expected to stream later this year exclusively on Paramount+.

Doctor Who showrunner discusses Disney+ deal

A new trailer for Doctor Who dropped amidst ongoing controversy surrounding season one's simultaneous global release on BBC iPlayer and Disney+.

Russell T Davies, returning series showrunner, has revealed why the Doctor Who/Disney+ deal was made.

“You’ve got to look in the long term at the end of the BBC, which is undoubtedly on its way in some shape or form. Is Doctor Who going to die then? No! You’ve got to prepare for that kind of stuff.

If Disney collapsed tomorrow and we had to go back to making Doctor Who on a normal BBC budget, you know what? We’d all rally round and make it and suddenly the stories would become claustrophobic ghost stories. A lot of people would like that very much, so I’m not saying you have to have this happen. But while it’s happening elsewhere, I think it’s unfair that it doesn’t happen to Doctor Who.”

It's worth noting the excellent adaptation of His Dark Materials was a BBC co-production with HBO and produced by Bad Wolf Studios.

Doctor Who season one premieres 11th May on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and 10th May on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. That's so timey-wimey.

Are you looking forward to season one of Doctor Who? Let me know in the comments below.

Alien: Romulus teases terror

On Wednesday, a teaser trailer dropped for Alien: Romulus.

Read the official synopsis:

"While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The old-school trailer music gave me all the chills. The look and feel of Alien: Romulus evokes Ridley Scott's original Alien, a haunted house in space, and survival horror video game spin-off Alien: Isolation.

The upcoming Alien franchise movie, directed by Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead), is said to be set between Alien and Aliens. Ridley Scott (Alien) is the producer, and James Cameron (Aliens) is an unofficial consultant. The movie stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is producing the visual effects.

"I wanted to travel back not just to the style of the original movies, but to the genre of the original movies," Álvarez told Variety. "I really wanted to go back to the sheer horror of the first film, and to take those elements of thriller that Aliens has, and Alien 3 has as well. We went to crazy extents to keep it pure to the film-making techniques of the first movie."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Isabela Merced recalls being on set during reshoots and holding an iPad belonging to the director.

“Fede Álvarez gave me the iPad where he watches playback, and he had the movie pulled up,” Merced said. “So I told him I wanted to see parts of it, and he showed it to me. I was the one holding the iPad, and there were ten people around me watching it on the iPad. So there’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting.”

Hopefully, Álvarez's standalone movie will revitalise the chest-bursting franchise as director Dan Trachtenberg's Prey did for studio stablemate Predator.

Originally intended to go straight-to-streaming on Hulu and Star on Disney+ like Predator prequel Prey, Alien: Romulus is only in cinemas on 16th August.

What did you think of the teaser trailer? Are you looking forward to Alien: Romulus? Let me know in the comments below.

Steven Moffat returns to the Whoniverse

Former series showrunner Steven Moffat returns to write an episode of Doctor Who with Julie-Anne Robinson (Bridgerton) directing.

Regarding his return to the Whoniverse, Moffat said: "Yes, okay, fair enough - apologies to everyone I’ve very slightly misled - I am in fact writing an episode of the series of Doctor Who. Exactly like I said I never would. What can I tell you? There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go - so long as I got out of his garden. Working with old friends and a brand new Doctor I couldn’t be happier. Sorry I was a bit reticent on the subject for so long. It was all part of an elaborate plan that would have delighted millions but at the last minute I forgot what it was."

Moffat wrote several fan-favourite episodes and created the iconic Weeping Angels during Russell T Davies' first tenure as showrunner.

On directing episodes for the new season of Doctor Who, Robinson remarked: "It was a tremendous honour to direct episodes of Doctor Who for the BBC and Disney+. This beloved franchise is 60 years old and still going strong. It is part of our collective memory as Brits. I’ve always admired Russell T Davies and Ncuti Gatwa is an unbelievably talented actor who has stepped into the role of the Fifteenth Doctor effortlessly, alongside the equally talented Millie Gibson. Steven Moffat gave me an intense challenge as a director. I asked him for a keyword to describe the overall tone of the episode he said: ‘Hitchcock’. I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks. I’m grateful to Bad Wolf, the BBC and Disney+. It was an incredible experience."

Doctor Who season one premieres 11th May on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and 10th May on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. That's so timey-wimey.

Are you looking forward to seeing Steven Moffat's episode of Doctor Who? Let me know in the comments below.

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The Acolyte, the latest Star Wars live-action spin-off series, debuts exclusively on Disney+ on 4th June.

Doctor Who returns for Eurovision

Doctor Who is set to make an explosive return in time for the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on 11th May.

Russell T Davies, showrunner says: "At last, it’s my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together. Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that’s been spanning time and space for decades. Don’t miss a second!"

The TARDIS will make its global premiere around the Whoniverse and for those in the UK, for the first time ever, the Doctor will land with two episodes premiering on BBC iPlayer at 00:00 on Saturday, before arriving on BBC One later that day right before the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final.

Outside the UK, Doctor Who begins streaming on 10th May at 7pm ET on Disney+ where available, giving audiences a simultaneous global launch.

A midnight launch in the UK has stirred up controversy among UK-based fans. I'll be off social media until I've watched the first two episodes in 4K UHD on BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

Are you looking forward to the new season of Doctor Who on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland? Let me know in the comments below.

Gareth Edwards to helm new Jurassic World

The next instalment in the Jurassic Park franchise is expected to be filmed this summer at Sky Studios Elstree with Gareth Edwards (The Creator) at the helm.

Edwards is no stranger to blockbuster monster movies after directing Godzilla and Star Wars.

"Watching ‘Star Wars' as a child, I always assumed blockbuster filmmaking was just a distant dream for someone growing up in the UK. But then, as I watched the behind-the-scenes, I suddenly realized it was all filmed in a studio just outside of London. And that making ambitious commercial films is totally within the reach of British filmmakers," he said. "When I finally got to make my first film ‘Monsters,' it was made in the true independent style - with a small cast and crew, a tiny budget and shot in just a few weeks. I learnt so much, so fast, and would definitely describe it was one of the most creative experiences I've ever had. Without that opportunity, I would never have been given ‘Godzilla,' ‘Star Wars' and ‘The Creator'… And now as we organize shooting the new ‘Jurassic Park' film in ‘a studio just outside London,' I hope we inspire other new filmmakers to shoot small but always dream big."

The upcoming sequel is executive produced by director Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park).

LEGO Star Wars 25-second film festival

LEGO Star Wars celebrates 25 years and fans (myself included) can submit an entry into an exciting 25-second film festival.

Our friends at LEGO sent over the details:

"Hello there.

This year is the 25th anniversary of LEGO® Star Wars™ (yes, it’s really been 25 years) and we’re going to spend it celebrating the fan community’s incredible creativity. We put out the sets, but it’s your imagination that makes LEGO Star Wars.

How are we celebrating fan creativity?

Introducing ‘The 25-Second Film Festival’.

We want to invite fans across the galaxy, like you, to submit any film in any style – stop motion brick films, hand-drawn films, films made with CGI etc – as long as it’s 25-seconds long and represents LEGO Star Wars sets and Minifigures.

Film-making masters are welcome, and creative padawans too; anyone with an idea is invited to bring it to life and submit. You can recreate your favourite StarWars moments, or forge a new one with the LEGO Star Wars characters, places and ships you treasure – whatever shows off your love for the galaxy.

This is your blank canvas to tell your own LEGO Star Wars story, and The LEGO Group’s opportunity to celebrate the community’s creativity in the way it deserves to be celebrated.

Never tell me the odds details...

Submissions are open on LEGO.com/LSW-25 between March 1st and April 22nd. We encourage you to read the rules before making your film, so you stand the best chance of creating something that’ll be accepted. Films that don’t meet the guidelines won’t pass moderation and won’t be featured in the festival.

You’re invited to create something bespoke for the festival, or if you’ve got a previous creation that’d be a perfect fit, that’s welcome too.

The 25-Second Film Festival then launches on May 4th. Films that are featured will appear on the official LEGO YouTube channel or www.LEGO.com/LSW-25 between the May 4th and 25th.

Whilst this isn’t a competition and there won’t be any winners, you’ll get access to exclusive digital rewards through LEGO Insiders just for submitting!

So, what are we asking of you?

We’d hugely appreciate you spreading the word about The 25-Second Film Festival to your audience or community!

We’ve enclosed our launch film (warning: may cause popcorn cravings) to show how we’re kicking everything off and putting out the call for entries. Feel free to include it in your overage! On our anniversary page, you and fellow fans will find a series of 25-second films that we commissioned to get the ball rolling, made by a mix of studios, individual creators and AFOL filmmakers – all of whom are fans. They can be watched over at www.LEGO.com/LSW-25 (you’ll find some still from these enclosed too though).

And lastly, if you personally have an idea for a film, or something you made a while ago that’ll fit nicely into 25-seconds, we’d love for you to submit!

Thank you, and may the Force be with you..."

Will you be submitting an entry to the LEGO Star Wars 25-second film festival? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster

Christmas 1995, my first Mac, a Performa 5200, introduced me to the rich video game tapestries weaved by LucasArts at the peak of its powers. Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire and Star Wars: Dark Forces were the first CD-ROM-based games I owned for Apple's personal computer platform.

Star Wars: Dark Forces, the first Star Wars first-person shooter (FPS) video game, follows the adventures of Kyle Katarn as he steals the Death Star plans decades before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Nightdive Studios and Lucasfilm Games are bringing Dark Forces to a new generation of gamers.

“Kyle Katarn really can do just about everything,” Nightdive Studios’ Max Waine tells StarWars.com, “and while he's doing everything, he manages to generally stay very cool and calm. Stealing the plans for the Death Star? Yep. Defeating Boba Fett? Yep. Punching out kell dragons? Yep. He can do that. And that's just in Dark Forces.”

The game's titular Dark Troopers have appeared in live-action in The Mandalorian on Disney+.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster is available now for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PC.

Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection

On Wednesday, Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games announced the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection during a Nintendo Direct.

Featuring restored online play for up to 64 players, the classic bundle includes Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II, originally developed by LucasArts, and will be available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PC on 14th March.

Electronic Arts (EA) revived the Star Wars Battlefront franchise in 2015. However, it was marred by microtransaction controversy. Thanks to Aspyr, who recently released the excellent Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, gamers (myself included) can play these classic Star Wars video games unadulterated.
