Sony has entered the digital-only chat by announcing it will no longer produce physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation in January 2028. Does this suggest the PlayStation 6 (PS6) will be digital-only?
The Tokyo-based electronics giant has also announced that 551 digital movies from Studio Canal would be removed from the PlayStation Store.
This is an anti-consumer practice.
The halcyon days of midnight launches are gone forever post-pandemic, and vertical companies will have complete control over distribution, availability and dynamic pricing.
There are also cybersecurity concerns. Who else remembers the infamous PlayStation Network (PSN) hack of 2011?
An online backlash from console gamers (myself included) has witnessed satirical responses from Domino’s Pizza and KFC mocking Sony’s profit-driven decision with clever viral marketing.
What are your thoughts on Sony ending physical media on PlayStation? Let me know in the comments below.
I’ve cancelled my psn subscription (due to expire January 2027).
ReplyDeleteRemember when Xbox tried this with the Xbox one and everyone kicked off? And Sony shared the ad this is how you share your games.
It’ll shut down cex and many other places. And consumers will suffer.
I prefer digital games. And my steam library is obviously all digital. I can’t remember the last time I bought a physical game but I have preordered a couple of UHD blu rays for movies.
It’s a strange world. And the storage prices at the moment don’t lend themselves to an all digital future.
I haven't renewed PS+ for a few years now! You raise a salient point regarding the secondary market and the impact it will have.
DeleteI haven't paid for PS+ for a year now. A friend bought a year for me as a gift and it expired a month ago. While digital is the way to go it should never be the only option. It isn't for movies or music and it shouldn't be for games.
ReplyDeleteSony has completely lost touch with what their customers expect from them in terms of games and services. If Sony ends physical media on PlayStation then I might as well buy digital on PC.
