Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Is superhero fatigue a thing, or can Spidey swing above it? Matt, Harry and Luke Charlton find out in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Guest post by the Charltons

Are you Spider-Man? Or are you Peter Parker?

This is the question that our hero is faced with throughout the latest movie from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures - with the latter hoping that the webhead carries on bringing in those dollars after every other attempt to bring a Spider-Man villain to the big screen without Spidey has failed miserably and is often lambasted for being ‘that bad’ - especially by the people who star in them.

We won’t mention Morbius; suffice to say we know that Jared Leto (Tron: Ares) is very capable in Masters of the Universe, but every single attempt by Sony to do anything with the Spider-Verse that doesn’t involve Spider-Man is terrible. It is known.

This will be a spoiler-free review for the most part - but if you want to stay completely away from anything going on until you’ve seen the movie, step away now.

We, of course, will not speculate nor confirm who Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) is playing in this movie.

She is in the movie. That’s all you’re getting. Oh, and there’s no Kate Bush.

The movie picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) being pretty much truly alone in the universe. Nobody knows who Peter is, but everyone knows Spider-Man and his reputation has never been better. Everyone loves him. It’s great.

If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ll have seen The Punisher (Frank Castle) features, as does Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) (and maybe even a little Hulk - and maybe even a big Hulk?).

I’ve seen a few early reviews that say bad things, but I think they were going to the shock jock angle. People saying it was emotionless and messy. I disagree, and at the moment the critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes is 91%, which is fair.

I’ve also seen people asking if we need a 4th Spider-Man film, and the answer is yes, we do, and more, please.

This movie is an emotional rollercoaster, and it will make you feel things, and feel things again. It covers topics of grief, of loneliness, of loss and of losing hope. But it also talks about finding hope and helping others, too.

There are many lessons, multiple layers and many laughs. The stakes are high; anything could happen, and you truly feel your heart leave your chest at multiple parts.

As always these days, I travelled to the cinema with Harry (15) and Luke (10), both big Spider-Man fans and again as a dad, I can’t tell you how much love I feel in my heart that I can share these moments with them. Seeing their faces light up with joy, seeing the shock and awe. You can’t beat it.

The cinema was the fullest it's been on any of our trips, given it was the first UK showing at 5:30pm on release day - and we get it two days before the USA, too. The people sat beside me sadly could not stay off their phones or stop talking all the way through - why people are happy to pay upwards of £70 with tickets, snacks and drinks and sit there like it is their living room, I have no idea - or maybe that’s just what it was, feeling they paid enough so they could do what they wanted?

The dynamics between Spider-Man and The Punisher are great. There’s a lot of quips, attitude and history there, and you get a feeling they’ve worked together quite closely in the past.

We see Peter go through a lot of changes in this movie, both physically and emotionally, and we also see him evolve in many other ways.

It’s fun to see how right or wrong people were about characters being photoshopped out of certain scenes in trailers, AKA Peter 2 and Peter 3 in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

There is a post-credits scene, just a single one - which doesn’t give much away but, as always with Marvel, it’s worth hanging around for, and shaking your head at the people who leave immediately - who even does that?

Some questions that you might have...

Will Spidey make it through the movie in one piece?
Does Venom eat lunch at Delmars?
Do we see Thor and the Avengers robbing ATMs again?
Do we see Man-Spider?
Does Ned turn into Hobgoblin?
Who is Sadie Sink playing?
Where else *do* those organic webs come out of?

For answers to these questions and more, book your tickets to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day... today!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day official trailer

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have dropped an official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland as the titular web-slinger.

Read the official synopsis:

"After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he's devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced."

When Spider-Man: Brand New Day wrapped filming last December, director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) published an open letter on social media praising Holland. The director thanked him for his “kind, generous leadership on and off screen, for your relentless work ethic, your fearless performances and for your friendship.”

“I’m so deeply grateful for the people who walked with me through the biggest, most rewarding film I’ve ever been a part of,” Cretton added. “To our amazing cast, for breathing so much life into these beloved characters and moving us every day. To our unbelievable crew, who worked tirelessly with unmatched creativity and craftsmanship, who made me laugh so hard my stomach never stopped hurting. I love you all so much and can’t wait for the world to see your stunning work on the big screen.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into cinemas on 31st July, 2026.

The X-Men return in Avengers: Doomsday

This is the Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer X-Men fans (myself included) are looking for.

Read the official synopsis:

"Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse."

From the X-Men universe, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, Channing Tatum and Rebecca Romijn will cross over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In my teens, I sought solace in the mutant tragedy of the X-Men. They became a metaphor for disability, something I was struggling with in the wake of a life-changing childhood trauma in primary school, and I wanted to be Cyclops.

Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame), will be released in cinemas on 18th December 2026.

Daredevil: Born Again this March

Marvel Television has dropped an official trailer for the long-awaited Daredevil: Born Again.

Read the official synopsis:

"In Marvel Television’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course."

Daredevil was a fan-favourite spin-off series on Netflix and the gritty gang are back on Disney+ after being teased in Hawkeye and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Personally, I really enjoyed Daredevil when it debuted a decade ago in 2015 and was quoted in publicity for a superhero series that championed diversity. Marvel's live-action spin-off series on Netflix were all cancelled by the streamer in 2018 ahead of Disney+.

The series also stars Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal. Dario Scardapane is showrunner. Episodes are directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Michael Cuesta, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, and David Boyd; and executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Sana Amanat, Chris Gary, Dario Scardapane, Christopher Ord & Matthew Corman, and Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead.

Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on 4th March on Disney+.

Coming in 2025 on Disney+

In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Disney+ unveiled an action-packed special look at its upcoming slate, including highly-anticipated series from Marvel, Star Wars, Hulu, and FX and featuring never-before-seen footage from upcoming new and returning original series for both Disney+ and Hulu in 2025.

Alien: Earth, Andor season two and Daredevil: Born Again have piqued my interest. “There’s something about seeing a xenomorph in the wilds of Earth with your own eyes,” teases Noah Hawley about the long-awaited FX TV series, Alien: Earth, based on the Alien franchise. “What was really fun for me was to really engage with the creature, bring some of my own thoughts to the design while not touching the silhouette, because that’s sacrosanct,” he continued. “But some of the elements as we know, whatever the host is, informs what the final creature is,” said Hawley, “I just wanted to play around a little bit to make it as scary as it should be.”

In related news. Deadpool & Wolverine debuts on Disney+ today.

What are you looking forward to watching in 2025 on Disney+? Let me know in the comments below.

New Star Wars trilogy from X-Men writer

According to Deadline, a new Star Wars trilogy is being developed by Lucasfilm and X-Men’s Simon Kinberg.

The trilogy takes place after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker with Kinberg writing. It will be produced by Kinberg and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Kinberg co-created fan-favourite Star Wars Rebels, so I'm optimistic.

Whilst we wait for official confirmation and further details, multiple movies are in development at Lucasfilm including The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the spin-off series Skeleton Crew is on Disney+ this holiday season.

Agatha All Along creates chaos this Halloween

Marvel Television dropped an official trailer for Agatha All Along at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Read the official synopsis:

"In Marvel Studios’ “Agatha All Along,” the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…"

The upcoming WandaVision live-action spin-off series, starring Kathryn Hahn as the titular witch, promises spooky fun in time for Halloween.

"We’ve seen [Agatha] with all her bravado and crazy confidence," Hahn recently explained. "So much of Agatha is performance. It was exciting to get to the kernel under the sass and sarcasm and taking pleasure in other people’s pain. There’s something broken under that, big-time."

Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along premieres in the UK on 19th September, with the first two episodes, exclusively on Disney+.

Paul Bettany will reprise the role of the fan-favourite synthezoid first introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The upcoming Marvel Studios series is expected to follow White Vision's search for Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).

Marvel Studios' Vision will premiere in 2026 on Disney+. Before that, Agatha All Along, WandaVision's first spin-off series, will premiere on 18th September on Disney+.

Agatha All Along

Marvel Studios brilliantly teased the upcoming WandaVision spin-off series starring Kathryn Hahn as the titular witch, Agatha Harkness, on Disney+.

Coven of Chaos, Agnes of Westview, Agatha: The Darkhold Diaries and Agatha: House of Harkness were all teased as titles on social media.

It was Agatha All Along. Well played, Marvel Studios!

WandaVision was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) spin-off series on Disney+ with spellbinding performances from Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision) and Hahn. Agatha All Along, the satirical theme song performed by Hahn herself, spawned countless memes and topped the iTunes charts during the pandemic.

Like X-Men '97, Agatha All Along will see Marvel Studios continue to pivot away from the notion that audiences must watch all the MCU things, which felt like too much homework.

“There was a lot of pressure post-‘Avengers: Endgame’ on the public to feel obligated to watch absolutely everything in order to watch anything,” says Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation. “Part of the rebranding was a signal to the general audience that we’re creating a lot of options, and you can follow your tastes within this brand. Some will be more comedic, some will be more dramatic, some will be animated, some will be live-action. Marvel is more than just one thing — it is actually many different genres that just happened to coexist in a single narrative.”

Fellow Doctor Who fans will be amused to know Russell T Davies named Jack Harkness after Agatha. Of course, the beloved BBC sci-fi series is now on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland.

Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along will premiere on 18th September on Disney+.

Are you looking forward to Agatha All Along? Let me know in the comments below.

X-Men '97 coming to Disney+

On Thursday, Marvel Studios dropped an official trailer for Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 on Disney+.

Read the official synopsis:

“X-Men’ 97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future."

X-Men ’97 picks up after the events of X-Men: The Animated Series’ finale, 1997’s “Graduation Day,” which saw an injured Charles Xavier leave his team of mutants behind to recover in outer space in the care of Lilandra among the Shi’ar Empire.

There’s a Colossus vintage action figure Easter egg at the start of the trailer. And now I want to collect the X-Men ‘97 action figures from Hasbro Pulse!

The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. In my teens, I sought solace in the mutant tragedy of the X-Men. They became a metaphor for disability, something I was struggling with in the wake of a life-changing childhood trauma in primary school, and I wanted to be Cyclops. How I envied actor James Marsden (Westworld) as Cyclops in director Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000) that foreshadowed a resurgence in superhero movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Following the X-Men '97 revival, I hope Marvel Animation (in conjunction with Sony) reboots Spider-Man: The Animated Series next!

The X-Men '97, an all-new series which features 10 episodes, begins streaming exclusively on Disney+ on 20th March.
