Deadpool director in talks for Star Wars

Deadline exclusively reports Stranger Things director Shawn Levy is in talks with Lucasfilm to direct a Star Wars movie after Deadpool 3 hits theatres in 2024 with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising the fan-favourite roles of Deadpool and Wolverine respectively.

Levy is no stranger to a galaxy far, far away... Netflix's Stranger Things is filled with Star Wars easter eggs and Ryan Reynolds wielded a lightsaber in Free Guy.

Look who's back in Terminator: Dark Fate

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back and he's brought an old friend. As someone who's been a fan of Terminator since the mid-eighties, I wasn't sure about another sequel after Genisys failed to ignite the box office and reboot the ailing franchise. However, the trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate has my attention.

With Tim Miller (Deadpool) at the helm, James Cameron (Avatar) as producer and Linda Hamilton reprising the role of Sarah Connor for the first time since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the franchise may have a resurgence not seen since Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Terminator: Dark Fate is in cinemas this October.

Disney merges with Fox ahead of Disney+

The Walt Disney Company has completed the acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox's film and television assets ahead of the launch of Disney+ later this year.

From Buffy to The Simpsons. The House of Mouse has further bolstered its existing portfolio (including Marvel and Lucasfilm) and brought Deadpool, Fantastic Four and the X-Men along for the ride.

“This is an extraordinary and historic moment for us—one that will create significant long-term value for our company and our shareholders,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger.

“Combining Disney’s and 21st Century Fox’s wealth of creative content and proven talent creates the preeminent global entertainment company, well positioned to lead in an incredibly dynamic and transformative era.”

What will this mean for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Let me know in the comments below.

Announcement and trailer for Avengers: Endgame

Marvel Studios has followed up a new trailer for Captain Marvel with a title announcement and trailer for Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers' highly-anticipated sequel to Avengers: Infinity War.

The trailer is accompanied with the message: “For those who have been here since the beginning. For those who have joined along the way. For the best fans in the Universe. This trailer is for you...“

Avengers: Endgame is the climactic conclusion to a decade-spanning story. If rumours are to be believed, it'll see time travel, the multiverse ushering in Deadpool and the X-Men, and the journey's end of beloved heroes as they attempt to undo Thanos' snap. The next instalment will be in cinemas April 2019.

Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

As predicted, Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for Captain Marvel during Good Morning America and it's all kinds of awesome.

The upcoming prequel movie, set in the nineties and featuring familiar faces including a young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), introduces airforce pilot Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as she becomes a superhero assigned to Starforce, ahead of Avengers 4.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described Carol Danvers as "the most powerful character" so far in the MCU, and fans can only speculate how she'll stop Thanos and introduce the Marvel multiverse. The multiverse opens the door for Deadpool, X-Men and more for Phase 4.

Captain Marvel flies onto cinema screens next March.

Disney's a step closer to buying Fox

Fellow Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, we're a step closer to seeing the Fox fanfare at the beginning of JJ Abrams' Episode IX and the X-Men (including Deadpool) fighting alongside the Avengers.

The Justice Department has approved Disney's purchase of Fox assets so long as it doesn't encompass sports. The Mouse House is happy to oblige and Fox is seemingly in favour of the increased deal estimated to be worth $71.3 billion dollars.

Comcast had previously put in a counter offer and may do so again. However, it's difficult to envisage a scenario where Disney CEO Bob Iger will fail to secure shareholder approval. Disney needs content ahead of launching DisneyLife, globally, spearheaded by an exclusive Star Wars live-action series produced by Jon Favreau next year.

Deadpool to remain R-Rated at Disney

Whilst the X-Men franchise has witnessed diminishing returns since First Class. Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, was a deviant delight. So much so, I regretted not seeing the movie at the cinema. Opting instead to watch it at home on Sky Cinema.

With Disney's acquisition of Fox film and television assets, fans have been fearful about Deadpool's future as part of the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Bob Iger, Disney CEO, has seemingly quashed those fears. Deadpool will remain an R-Rated franchise.

"It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool," he told The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

"As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine."

Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are unaffected by the deal. However, expect X-Men and Fantastic Four to be rebooted into the MCU in the future.

Star Wars and Marvel movies to infinity... and beyond!

Disney CEO Bob Iger told the BBC the Star Wars saga is set to run and run. Most likely outliving fans who watched the original trilogy first time round.

“There are five Star Wars films – four more with Episode VII: The Force Awakens – that are in varying stages of development and production,” Iger told Newsbeat. “There will be more after that. I don’t know how many; I don’t know how often.”

This also applies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which shows no signs of stopping soon.

“Marvel, you’re dealing with thousands and thousands of characters [from the comic books] – that will go on forever,” Iger said, clearly suggesting there's no fatigue from fans.

“No, I don’t think they’re getting weary,” Iger added. “But I think we keep raising the bar in terms of telling stories that bring them back, that excite them, that make it feel new, and that is what we do for a living.”

The next installment in the Star Wars saga is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and for true believers there's Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange in 2016. X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool are not part of the MCU.

Which of these Star Wars and Marvel movies are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments below.
