Mass Effect cancelled for Star Wars

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports that EA cancelled Mass Effect 5 to work on Star Wars: Battlefront 3. Schreier says Star Wars: Battlefront 3 hasn't begun development, yet the publisher still chose it over Mass Effect. The developer is debt-ridden, and this mitigates financial risk.

Given that EA originally acquired BioWare for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, the news is bittersweet. For decades, EA has been criticised for how it manages the studios it acquires, but this isn't unique. EA is no longer the company that Trip Hawkins founded in 1982.

While the Star Wars deal was the catalyst, Schreier also points out other factors that led to BioWare's demise. The studio's most recent game, Dragon Age: Veilguard, fell 50% short of sales expectations. Before that, 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda was poorly received despite excellent combat, with future DLC cancelled, and 2019’s Anthem was considered a live service failure.

However, Mass Effect fans (myself included) are not giving up on the beloved sci-fi franchise.

The #SaveMassEffect movement has gained momentum online, and fans are planning a massive play event and billboards on N7 Day 2026! Even if this doesn't move the dial, I'm proud to be part of a positive gaming community.

What are your plans for N7 Day? Let me know in the comments below.
