Retro-inspired game for Masters of the Universe

Mattel and Limited Run Games announced He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction at Gamescom.

“Dragon Pearl of Destruction is one of the exciting ways we’re bringing Mattel’s brands to life through digital games,” said Erika Winterholler, Head of Business Development, Digital Games at Mattel. “It’s a love letter to those who grew up with He-Man, combining nostalgic visuals with fast-paced, modern gameplay. Our goal is to honor the franchise’s legacy while introducing it to a new generation of players. The team at Limited Run Games shares that passion, and we hope the game connects with both lifelong fans and newcomers alike.”

Inspired by the iconic ‘80s cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction allows players to take control of Eternia’s beloved heroes, including He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and more, to battle Skeletor and Evil-Lyn and save Eternia from plunging into darkness.

Fight through over 12 action-packed levels using character-specific moves, abilities, and power-ups to stop Skeletor’s ancient ritual that threatens to take over Eternia. Battle Cat, He-Man’s fearless feline companion, also joins the fray, battling on the side of justice with his claws unsheathed.

“Dragon Pearl of Destruction is the Masters of the Universe arcade game I yearned for as a child,” said Josh Fairhurst, CEO and Executive Producer at Limited Run Games. “I am excited and honored to be playing a small part in making it a reality.”

Growing up, I wanted an Intellivision to play the Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man video game. An arcade port of Golden Axe filled the void on the Sega Mega Drive, and now fans (myself included) can play a retro-inspired 2D brawler by Bitmap Bureau on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC in 2026.

Masters of the Universe x Transformers

Club Grayskull, which I ponied up an annual subscription to obtain He-Ro, a member-only grail action figure from my childhood, teased future Masters of the Universe (MotU) crossovers on the official forum (forums are still a thing in 2025?).

On Friday, Mattel and Hasbro announced Masters of the Universe x Transformers action figures at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). An included mini-comic will provide a backstory to the crossover, much like the original toy line!

As a fan of both toy lines since day one, I've pre-ordered Megatron Armour Skeletor and Bumblebee Armour Man-At-Arms from Mattel Creations, as I didn't want to miss out. The Fright Zone sold out in less than 30 minutes on Mattel Creations. I had the long-awaited playset in my cart, but to no avail. However, Hurricane Hordak and Despara won't be homeless for much longer as I've pre-ordered Hordak's stronghold from The Whole Shebang.

Fans have wondered where's Optimus Prime Armour He-Man and why isn't Man-At-Arms, Brawn? The designers revealed that Buzz-Off was an early concept for Bumblebee. This crossover looks fun, and there will be further action figures in the line. Arcee Armour Teela?

In related news. An Amazon exclusive Castle Grayskull (affiliate link) and Hot Wheels x Transformers Bone Shaker and Twin Mill (affiliate link) were also announced at SDCC.

What are your thoughts on Masters of the Universe x Transformers? Which action figures would you like to see? Are you a fan of toy line crossovers? Is it lazy nostalgia to fleece fans? Let me know in the comments below.

Barbie Whoniverse at MCM London Comic Con

Making its intergalactic debut at MCM London Comic Con on Friday, 23rd May, Mattel Creations is exclusively unveiling the new Barbie x Doctor Who dolls at the show.

Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) and Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) are immortalised as Barbie dolls! Gatwa played a Ken in the Barbie movie and shared his thoughts on seeing his Barbie doll for the first time: “Barbie is iconic, so to see a Barbie iteration of the Doctor was emotional, surreal, incredible and I can't wipe the smile off my face. I hope kids out there are able to enjoy the doll and see themselves in it and think 'I can do anything’.”

Pre-order the Fifteenth Doctor from Amazon (affiliate link).
Pre-order Ruby Sunday from Amazon (affiliate link).

New episodes of Doctor Who drop every Saturday on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. Season two is available for pre-order from Amazon (affiliate link).

Will you be adding the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday Barbie dolls to your collection? Let me know in the comments below.

Masters of the Universe first look

Nicholas Galitzine shared a first look at the upcoming Masters of the Universe live-action film, based on Mattel's iconic multimedia franchise, produced by Mattel Films and Amazon MGM Studios. In 1982, He-Man and Skeletor were unleashed on toy aisles! I was off sick from school when my late mum surprised me with these amazing action figures that had seemingly stepped off the pages of Fighting Fantasy...

The film will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword - the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!

It is directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee) from a script by Chris Butler, and stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam / He-Man, alongside Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm / Fisto, and Jared Leto as Skeletor.

Masters of the Universe is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 5th June 2026.

Barbie

Toy giant Mattel is no stranger to live-action adaptations of its beloved brands. I fondly remember renting Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) as He-Man, on home video in a pre-streaming world. However, Mattel lags behind Hasbro's Transformers franchise on the big screen.

Enter Barbie. Is she the Iron Man of the Mattel Cinematic Universe spawning Barney and Hot Wheels spin-offs in an era where kidults (myself included) buy more toys?

Nick Smith, our US-based stellar scribe, gets pretty in pink to see if Barbie is plastic fantastic or destined for the pop culture bargain bin...

Guest post by Nick Smith

Great music relies not just on its memorable motifs and crescendos but also on those quiet moments in between, the pauses and hushed beats. These little gaps in the wall of sound add pace, structure and a moment to catch one’s breath.

The same can be said of other forms of art – negative space in a painting, transitions in literature, and the moments of stillness in dance.

Among all its jokes, costume changes, cameos and camera moves, Barbie’s at its best in its emotionally charged slower scenes: flashbacks and flashes sideways to the humans who play with Stereotypical Barbie, authentic slices of life with a tune that plucks the heartstrings. These are director Greta Gerwig’s forte and add depth to a story that, at times, gets very silly.

To get a full analysis of this summer’s pinkest blockbuster, I went to my local Regal cinema with Dana and Kelly, two friends who are both proud grandmothers. Dana is a Will Ferrell fan and Kelly had an original Barbie from the 1950s when she was a kid.

Would this modern take on a classic toy resonate with my female pals? Or would it only work for the rest of the audience in our movie theatre, who were ladies in the 18-25-year-old range coveted by Hollywood marketing mucky-mucks?

Barbie manages to do both, with modern, metacritical gags (Mattel is an antagonist in this movie, produced by Mattel) and an attention span short enough for TikTok teens, along with nods to classic Hollywood (ersatz backdrops, an outré musical number) and references to old toys for the blue rinse brigade.

It would have been fun to see more depth in those references – official, discontinued releases like Earring Magic Ken and Growing Up Skipper are thrown in for a quick laugh and don’t really have anything to do with the plot.

The film is strongest when we’re following a life-sized, human Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling). They live in Barbieland, a vast, brashly coloured playset where every day is the same until someone in the real world affects her well-being.

In Los Angeles, Barbie and Ken face ridicule as they search for the person causing Barbie’s existential angst. Barbie begins to experience emotions for the first time (wonderfully performed by Robbie) and Ken learns about our patriarchal society, the opposite of the Amazonian Barbieland.

By the time Will Ferrell turns up and acts silly, a lot is stewing in this plastic pot but Gerwig balances all the ingredients perfectly. As long as the film isn’t taken too seriously, it’s a lot of fun and the social commentary is never overbearing. The message of female empowerment has been spread before, but it seems fresh and unforced.

There are holes in logic, with Ken and his fellow Kens gaining knowledge out of nowhere for the sake of a joke. A Barbie b*tch rap by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice (‘Barbie World’) doesn’t gel with Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ song. At all. Talented actors such as Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) aren’t given enough to say or do, and the opening sequence is its least original; Kubrick has been spoofed many times before, most notably by Mel Brooks and in The Simpsons.

Otherwise, the movie rarely takes a wrong step.

After the movie, I asked Dana and Kelly for their verdict. Dana didn’t get it. Kelly liked the nostalgia aspect – it reminded her of visiting her friends as a kid and playing with their Barbie accessories. Is it great art? Probably not, but it’s far better than any toy tie-in has to be, surpassing its source material, acknowledging Barbie’s feminist detractors and showing us a Dream House world of possibilities.

Have you seen Barbie? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Steven Spielberg figure from Jurassic Park

Mattel Creations has announced an exclusive Steven Spielberg action figure from the collector-acclaimed Hammond Collection celebrating 30 years of Jurassic Park.

From Mattel Creations:

"Thirty years ago, Steven Spielberg recreated dinosaurs on the big screen and started a global phenomenon. Today we’re celebrating the man, the myth, and the movie with the Jurassic World Hammond Collection Man Creates Dinosaurs Steven Spielberg figure. He even comes with a camera, personalized director’s chair, and a Dilophosaurus with a removable frill and animatronic stand to reenact the magic of the original movie."

George Lucas was immortalised as a Star Wars Black Series Stormtrooper action figure by Hasbro to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm. As a lifelong fan of Spielberg's movies too, like many, I would love to add this Mattel action figure to my collection. However, I'll have more luck discovering a new dinosaur species on the Jurassic Coast.

Mattel VP and Global Head of Action Figures PJ Lewis says, "To celebrate the 30th, we wanted to honor the visionary that brought Jurassic Park to the big screen. Spielberg is a legend and we’ve never seen an action figure of him before, and he is just as much a part of the legacy as the dinosaurs and characters in the film. The team created the first-ever action figure of Steven Spielberg based on a behind-the-scenes photo from filming Jurassic Park."

The Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Steven Spielberg Figure will be available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) and in limited quantities on Mattel Creations.

Will you be getting the Steven Spielberg action figure? Let me know in the comments below.

Hasbro and Mattel merge iconic brands

Toy titans Hasbro and Mattel are joining forces to create co-branded toys and games beginning with Barbie and Transformers (via The Toy Book).

“We are excited to pair some of the most popular brands together for the first time,” says Nick Karamanos, Senior Vice President of Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel. “This collaboration features world-class intellectual property (IP), celebrates the timeless appeal of these brands, and creates unique play opportunities for fans.”

This summer sees highly-anticipated movies for Barbie and Transformers brands.

“With the major theatrical releases of the Transformers and Barbie movies this summer, we’re excited to bring brand-new play experiences to fans, families, and movie and toy lovers all around the world,” says Casey Collins, President, Global Licensed Consumer Products & Business Development at Hasbro. “Working with iconic brands in pop culture truly showcases our strategy in action, as we continue to expand our product experiences for audiences everywhere.”

Is it too soon for a Masters of the Universe/Transformers crossover?

Funko mauls Mondo

In the wake of Funko throwing away $30 to £36 million worth of Pops into a landfill (shades of the ill-fated Atari E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game), the collectibles company has laid off high-end subsidiary Mondo’s co-founders and shuttered its fan-favourite movie poster division.

This is less than a year after Funko bought Mondo.

“Mondo’s devoted fanbase and high-end pop culture collectibles make it the perfect complement to Funko’s current portfolio of brands,” Funko’s Andrew Perlmutter, formerly CEO and now president, said when the deal was announced. “By leveraging our international distribution and licensing network, we feel well positioned to expedite the growth of the Mondo brand.”

I proudly wear t-shirts featuring Mondo's fantastic Star Wars creations and, had I been attending, would have worn them to Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023.

Mondo's toy division remains unaffected by Funko's cuts and continues to produce limited edition Masters of the Universe products licensed by Mattel.

The cost of living crisis has impacted industries across the globe resulting in massive redundancies to improve profits. All affected employees have my empathy as I was laid off at the start of the millennium, which pivoted me into digital content creation. Others may not have that luxury.

During the pandemic, many kidults (myself included) started collecting again. From action figures to LEGO, there's been a resurgence. However, with rising costs, folks are cutting back or stopping entirely.

I've stopped collecting most things and only occasionally buy sought-after G.I. Joe Classified Series, Vintage Star Wars and Transformers brand exclusives from Hasbro Pulse (as a non-premium member).

What are your thoughts on Funko's Mondo moves? The state of collecting? Let me know in the comments below.

Masters of the Universe at 40

40 years ago, He-Man and Skeletor were unleashed on toy aisles! I was off school sick when my late mum surprised me with these amazing action figures that had seemingly stepped off the pages of Fighting Fantasy…

Fast forward to 2022. Mattel Creations' Masters of the Universe Origins Eternia Playset is already successfully crowdfunded ahead of November's deadline. Early bird backers got King Grayskull as an exclusive bonus action figure. Moaty, the moat monster tier 2 unlock, has become a social media sensation with fans (myself included) calling for Mattel to release the figure separately in the future.

To celebrate He-Man's 40th birthday, Nick Smith, our US-based pop culture philosopher, examines the enduring appeal of Masters of the Universe.

Guest post by Nick Smith

Even He-Man can’t fight the ravages of time. The muscle-bound hero turns 40 this year. He’s yet to get a middle-aged spread and his blonde locks show no sign of pattern baldness but he’s not prevalent on toy shelves the way he used to be.

Hope is not lost for this champion of Eternia. My local Walmart has a toy Battle Cat and a Masters of the Universe Origins Castle Grayskull Playset that can be purchased from Mattel Creations for $80.

To understand why collectors are willing to pay such a mighty price for a plastic diorama, we have to go back to the ‘80s, and a world that forged the sword and sorcery of Conan the Barbarian with the pew! pew! pew! sci-fi of Star Wars to make He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

After Mattel turned down the option to make Star Wars figures and watched Kenner print oodles of money, the company created its own concept, hiring Roger Sweet, Star Wars novelist Donald F. Glut and others to build a brand with a brand-new world to go along with it. Although the toy line was created in 1981, it didn’t hit stores until 1982. Filmation developed an animated series, syndicated in 1983.

Prince Adam (voiced by John Erwin) was the hunky alter ego of He-Man, who materialized up to save the day and fight the evil Skeletor (Alan Oppenheimer, who also voiced the cat and other characters). He-Man and Skelly both had a crew of strong warriors ripe for action-figure poses.

The protagonists included Man-At-Arms, Man-E-Faces, Orko, Fisto, Ram-Man, Teela and She-Ra, Princess of Power; the antagonists were legion, including Beast Man, Evil-Lyn, Faker, Tri-Klops, Trap Jaw and Hordak. Many of the characters had either animal or mechanical characteristics and they were all ready for grappling matches on a kid’s living room floor.

It’s no coincidence that these toy people bore similarities to the wrestling figures that followed in later years, making Mattel millions.

He-Man had a big sword but he didn’t use it often. At the time, violence was rarely condoned on American children’s television; He-Man was allowed to punch the bad guys and he tossed them around a lot. Shows would end with a moral, giving the action an ethical perspective and making it more than a half-hour ad for the toys.

130 episodes of classic He-man were produced, running for two years on its original release. Despite all his efforts to conquer Eternia, Skeletor never succeeded, and the pathos did not escape him; he admitted to his poor batting average in episodes like The Arena. No wonder he cheated to try to get the upper hand.

The animation was limited – some shots are reused, especially during skirmishes – and the storylines were simple. In 1987, the plot of He-Man’s live-action movie pulled out all the stops to compete with Star Wars on the big screen; Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) had the Power of Grayskull, Frank Langella was a far-from-pathetic Skeletor and James Tolkan, the cranky principal from Back to the Future, played the even more cranky Detective Lubric.

The movie cleverly brings He-Man to our world, one year after Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home showed a similar culture clash. Unfortunately, it earned less than it cost to make and a sequel, Cyborg, morphed into a non-He-Man B-movie.

As the toys dwindled, attempts were made to revive the television series, most recently on Netflix. Sympathetic loser Skeletor may have lost his battles with He-Man but he won the meme war on social media, his face popping up to taunt us as we doomscroll.

The cartoons, a live-action movie and toys all have a place in many hearts, a sign of a more innocent age where conflicts could be won with a well-aimed fist and the power of a brightly wrapped parable.

What are your memories of Masters of the Universe? Who is your favourite action figure? Are you still collecting? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars: Bring Home the Galaxy

There’s no Force Friday this year. However, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced Star Wars: Bring Home the Galaxy, a follow-up to last year's Bring Home the Bounty!

Bring Home the Galaxy, a 9-week global consumer product campaign in association with licensees including Funko, Hasbro, LEGO and Mattel, highlights new Star Wars merchandise from the original trilogy to The Mandalorian every Tuesday through 13th December.

Hasbro's releasing a retro collection on Hasbro Pulse to mark the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in 2023.

I vividly remember the launch of Kenner's original Star Wars: Return of the Jedi toy line in 1983!

The first time I saw Darth Vader, in person, was at my local Debenhams (now John Lewis). Mum kept it a special surprise and took me to the toy department where the lift opened to reveal the dark lord himself and Stormtroopers...

School friends were there, too. After a meet-and-greet with Darth Vader, we went to the toy aisles and discovered Biker Scouts, Ewoks and much more on pegs. This was Christmas for Star Wars fans (myself included).

Bring Home the Galaxy (affiliate link) on Amazon. Other UK-based retail partners include Argos, Disney Store, Smyths, The Entertainer and Zavvi.

Masters of the Universe Origins Eternia Playset

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Masters of the Universe franchise, Mattel has announced the Masters of the Universe Origins Eternia Playset goes on sale on Mattel Creations on 12th October, which marks the toy line's 40th birthday.

"Join the Battle for Eternia! Locked in an everlasting war, this Eternia playset is swarming with action-packed features and hidden surprises. The Grayskull Tower and the Viper Tower flank the Eternia Tower as the forces of good and evil wage war. March into combat and fund the playset for the ultimate centerpiece to your MOTU collection."

Whilst I was fortunate enough to own both Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain playsets as cherished Christmas and Halloween gifts respectively, I never saw the original Eternia playset, a holy grail, at my local toy store.

This Mattel Creations crowdfunded project requires a minimum of 5,000 backers for the $550.00 playset (before international shipping and import duties), which will ship on or before 29th March 2024.

The 5,000 backer threshold is lower than most HasLab crowdfunding projects. So, it's evident Mattel wants to produce the Eternia playset as the highlight of its Masters of the Universe celebrations. Early bird backers will receive King Grayskull.

Personally, I stopped collecting Masters of the Universe action figures after the Four Horsemen Studios' amazing Classics line concluded on Matty Collector. This Eternia playset looks amazing. However, I won't be backing it due to the cost of living crisis.

Will you be backing the Masters of the Universe Origins Eternia Playset? Did you own the original? Are you enjoying MOTUesday? What are your thoughts on multinational toy companies pivoting to crowdfunding? Let me know in the comments below.

Life finds a way in Jurassic World Dominion

Universal Pictures has released an official trailer for Jurassic World Dominion.

The upcoming sequel, directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park), unites the cast of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World.

Read the official synopsis:

"This summer, experience the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era as two generations unite for the first time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, a bold, timely and breathtaking new adventure that spans the globe."

The original Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg with an assist from George Lucas, spawned a multimedia franchise and paved the way for the Star Wars prequels. Kenner's electronic T-Rex remains one of my favourite collectibles and Mattel's latest line of toys is hugely popular with generations of fans.

Jurassic World Dominion, delayed due to the pandemic, is in cinemas on 10th June.

Masters of the Universe movie on Netflix

Mattel Films and Netflix are producing a new live-action Masters of the Universe movie starring Kyle Allen (West Side Story) as He-Man. Mattel Films was previously developing a reboot with Sony Pictures.

Read the official synopsis:

"In Masters of the Universe, an orphan named Adam discovers he is a prince destined to be the savior of a faraway land and must quickly learn of his power and the importance of saving his true home from an evil force."

Mattel's Masters of the Universe was a monster hit in the 1980s, spawning an animated series and a live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as the heroic He-Man and Frank Langella as his nemesis, Skeletor. Whilst the film bombed at the box office, it became a cult favourite on home video.

Netflix has become the home of all things Masters of the Universe beginning with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. This was followed by Masters of the Universe: Revelation, a continuation of the original classic series, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Both animated series have toy lines (affiliate link).

“Masters of the Universe is an iconic property that shaped the imaginations of an entire generation of kids with the message of becoming the best version of yourself,” says Robbie Brenner, executive producer of Mattel Films. “With our partners at Netflix, we look forward to showing audiences that anything can happen in Eternia. We are continuing to unlock this global franchise in new ways, and we can’t wait to see Kyle battle it out with Skeletor in this epic live-action saga.”

What are your memories of the live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man in 1987, and are you looking forward to the new movie on Netflix? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars: Bring Home the Bounty

Whilst there’s no Force Friday this year, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced Star Wars: Bring Home the Bounty!

Bring Home the Bounty, a global consumer product campaign in association with licensees including Funko, Hasbro, LEGO and Mattel, highlights new Star Wars merchandise every Tuesday through 28th December.

“With the Lucasfilm 50th anniversary coming to a close this year, we wanted to find a way to celebrate all of our beloved characters and stories from the classic to the new and everything in-between” said Paul Southern, Senior Vice President, Franchise & Licensing, Lucasfilm. “There will be something to excite every Star Wars fan this year with such a wide assortment of items to enjoy and engage with, whether fans are adding to their own collections or scouring for the perfect gift.”

Hot Wheels R/C The Batman Batmobile

Mattel has produced Hot Wheels Batmobiles before, but this is one of the toy company's most detailed (and expensive) to date.

Therefore I couldn't miss mentioning this must-have for premium collectors.

Announced during DC FanDome 2021. This 1:10 scale movie-accurate Hot Wheels R/C replica of The Batman's Batmobile, featuring an animatronic 6-inch Batman and Batcave display, will cost you $500 direct from Mattel Creations or more on eBay once it's sold out.

I'll save myself $500 (before international shipping and import duties) and continue to admire my 1:18 scale Hot Wheels Batmobile from Tim Burton's Batman.

Will you be ordering a Hot Wheels R/C The Batman Batmobile? Let me know in the comments below.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe: Revelation is showrunner Kevin Smith's continuation of the original Filmation series for Netflix. Whereas He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a reboot in the style of Netflix stablemate Trollhunters.

A description for the upcoming Netflix series reads: "On Eternia, the first planet of creation, a demonic tyrant rises: Skeletor! With dark armies at his command, Skeletor is on the march, hell-bent on capturing Eternia’s kingdoms, and its ultimate prize – Castle Grayskull, the ancient fortress of mystery said to contain the greatest power in the universe. It’s up to He-Man and his brave squad of rookie heroes to stop Skeletor and restore the peace.

Both sides come armed with enchanted Power Weapons – transforming them into Masters of the Primal Powers of the Universe. It’s Master vs. Dark Master, He-Man vs. Skeletor – fighting for control of Eternia, Castle Grayskull, and the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?"

"Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base," Fred Soulie, Senior Vice President of Content Distribution and Business Development, Mattel said previously. "The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them."

As with the newly released Masterverse collection, there will be a new line of action figures and accessories for the series available at Walmart in the US. Hopefully, Smyths Toys and Amazon will stock them in the UK.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will debut on 16th September on Netflix.

He-Man fights to save Eternia on Netflix

Happy 4th of July to all our US-based readers! Nick Smith is taking a well-earned break from hunting xenomorphs to enjoy the Independence Day festivities this weekend. So, I'm on hand to champion the heroes of Eternia in their darkest hour.

Netflix Geeked has announced an official trailer for Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1.

There's still no sign of Stratos as a friend and fellow fan of the franchise pointed out on Facebook. Perhaps he'll appear in Part 2?

The Kevin Smith led production also announced a few more voices for its cast: Dennis Haysbert as King Grayskull, Adam Gifford as Vikor and Jay Tavare as Wundar.

The five-episode series has a star-packed cast including Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Chris Wood as Prince Adam/He-Man, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Stephen Root as Cringer, Henry Rollins as Tri-Klops, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena, Jason Mewes as Stinkor, and more.

Here’s the official description: "The war for Eternia culminates in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, an innovative and action-packed animated series that picks up where the iconic characters left off decades ago. After a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Eternia is fractured and the Guardians of Grayskull are scattered. And after decades of secrets tore them apart, it’s up to Teela to reunite the broken band of heroes and solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to restore Eternia and prevent the end of the universe."

Smith's trailer breakdown amps the hype to the nth degree with his impassioned insights.

The Masterverse toy line is now appearing alongside Masters of the Universe Origins at retail. So far, I've not collected any of Mattel's latest lines since Masters of the Universe Classics ended! However, Hallmark's Castle Grayskull Christmas tree ornament is the perfect gift this holiday season. Hopefully, it'll be available in the UK, too.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation premieres on Netflix on 23rd July.

After watching the trailer, are you excited for Masters of the Universe: Revelation? Let me know in the comments below.

Kevin Smith on Masters of the Universe

Following the release of an official teaser trailer during Netflix's Geeked Week, Kevin Smith sheds further light on his upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revelation series.

"We pick up, spiritually, where He-Man and the Masters of the Universe left off," Smith notes. "So at the beginning of our episode, it plays for the first 10 minutes like a way better animated version of the old show. It's very simple, we establish the relationships, and it's very warm and young feeling. And then about halfway through the show, we turn everything. Something happens, and we kind of grow it up."

Seemingly his hints have stirred up controversy with the suggestion (from some fans) that the series will mostly focus on Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in a bait and switch, which the Masters of the Universe: Revelation showrunner has debunked.

Each episode will be an homage to an eighties movie:

Ep 1 - Superman II
Ep 2 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Ep 3 - Batman
Ep 4 - Hellraiser
Ep 5 - Masters of the Universe

Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing more Masters of the Universe from the fine folks at Mattel Television.

What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below.

Masters of the Universe at Netflix’s Geeked Week

An official teaser trailer for Masters of the Universe: Revelation dropped during Netflix Geeked's first-ever Geeked Week.

Unlike She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a continuation of the original Filmation animated series that ended in 1985.

Read the official series synopsis:

“After a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Eternia is fractured and the Guardians of Grayskull are scattered. And after decades of secrets tore them apart, it’s up to Teela to reunite the broken band of heroes, and solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to restore Eternia and prevent the end of the universe.”

Netflix's Masters of the Universe first look

He-Man and Skeletor are back to battle for the future of Eternia!

As a fan of Mattel's Masters of the Universe franchise since the classic toy line's original release in the early eighties, I've been excited to see what director Kevin Smith's (Clerks) animated reboot would look like at Netflix.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation, picking up where the original animated series ended in 1985, builds on the success of Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power reboot in 2018. Some of my earliest blog posts chronicled collecting Masters of the Universe action figures in the eighties and noughties, and Smith is passionate about the beloved franchise.

“So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise,” Smith said in a statement.

“So many of us were touched by these stories and these characters early in our lives and we're so happy to come back to Eternia. But even if you’ve never watched a single episode of the show or don’t know this universe at all, you can jump right into the story. It’s a really classic, universal action-adventure epic about growth, discovery, magic, and power. This series explores destiny in a fresh way. There’s a lot of reconciling with secrets, betrayal, trust, acceptance, love, and ultimately, loss.”

Read the official series synopsis:

"The war for Eternia culminates in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, an innovative and action-packed animated series that picks up where the iconic characters left off decades ago. After a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Eternia is fractured and the Guardians of Grayskull are scattered. And after decades of secrets tore them apart, it’s up to Teela to reunite the broken band of heroes, and solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to restore Eternia and prevent the end of the universe."

The five-episode series from Mattel Television has a star-studded cast including Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Lena Headey as Evil-Lyn, Chris Wood as Prince Adam/He-Man, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Stephen Root as Cringer, Henry Rollins as Tri-Klops, Alicia Silverstone as Queen Marlena and Jason Mewes as Stinkor. Hollywood composer Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica) is on hand to underscore the fantastical world of Eternia.

The Netflix series, a love letter to grown-up fans (myself included), will of course be supported by obligatory toys and related consumer products from Mattel. The initial wave of 7" Masterverse action figures arrives in-store and online (affiliate link) on 15th June. Further waves are expected to be revealed at Power-Con 2021.

“Last year, we set the stage for the 2021 reboot of Masters of the Universe through the launch of nostalgic action figures and a Castle Grayskull playset, that offer a retro play experience, to much fanfare,” said PJ Lewis, VP, Global Head, Action Figures at Mattel.

“Our new line, designed for collectors and new fans alike, provides a modern interpretation of these classic characters, and I can’t wait for you to check it out.”

Masters of the Universe: Revelation premieres on Netflix on 23rd July.
