The Mandalorian channels Game of Thrones

The latest episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+ channels Game of Thrones, and features a surprising redemption arc.

Following last week's Coruscant capers in The Convert, which potentially ties into Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Foundling briskly explores Grogu's past as Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) go in pursuit of dragons in an adventure worthy of Classic Star Wars comics strips.

Grogu experiences a flashback to Order 66 from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and his surprising saviour is finally revealed. No, it's not Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) saving Baby Yoda from 501st Legion clone troopers, led by Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen), as they storm the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, it's Ahmed Best!

Best is perhaps infamously known for playing Jar Jar Binks in George Lucas' prequel trilogy. Here, Best is playing Jedi Master Kelleran Beq and it's a joy to behold as he valiantly battles clone troopers and escapes from Coruscant with Grogu.

I hope we see Beq again.

The Mandalorian is tantamount to Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and Dave Filoni (Star Wars Rebels) unleashing the contents of a mythological toy box with the power of Epic Games' Unreal Engine. It’s film school for geeks with knowing nods to spaghetti western and tech noir genres.

More galactic joy ride than a deep character-driven rumination on love and loss like Pascal’s other hit television series, The Last of Us. And I’m fine with that.

In related news on Disney+. Star Wars: The Bad Batch season two follows Omega and Clone Force 99 as Filoni's animated spin-off series continues to explore events between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope with the maturity of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

AT-TE with Commander Cody at LEGO CON

LEGO CON 2022 was filled with exciting announcements to celebrate the beloved brick brand's 90 Years of Play.

From Galaxy Explorer, an homage to the original LEGO Space spaceship from 1979, which I still have in the attic, to Star Wars! There was something for brick builders of all ages.

Perhaps the most compelling news for LEGO Star Wars fans (myself included) is the AT-TE Walker with fan-favourite Commander Cody.

Read the official description of the LEGO Star Wars AT-TE Walker:

"Power into battle against the Separatist Droid Army, with the mighty AT-TE Walker! With Commander Cody in the cockpit, stride across rocky terrain and fire the rotating heavy blaster cannon. Grab weapons and thermal detonators from the cabin and deploy the 212th Clone Troopers to fight the Battle Droids on the ground. Who will triumph in the Battle of Utapau? It’s up to you!"

The LEGO Star Wars AT-TE Walker is available from LEGO AU, UK and US (affiliate links).

Will you be adding the LEGO Star Wars AT-TE Walker to your collection? What did you think of LEGO CON 2022? Let me know in the comments below.

Attack of the Clones at 20

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) are currently reprising their roles from the prequel trilogy in the spectacular Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off series on Disney+.

Nick Smith remembers the first sequel to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Guest post by Nick Smith

As I drove past the Odeon movie theatre in Lincoln, UK, back in 2002, I wondered if my son would be able to handle the scary, intense moments in the PG-rated Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Episode II in George Lucas’ sprawling space saga?

My kid, Sam, was only two years old, but I was itching to share my love of Star Wars with him. I’d heard the movie contained fantasy violence and I didn’t want my son to be so scarred for life that he’d turn to the dark side and become a Star Trek fan or something.

Better to check it out, myself, first. So I did.

I still remember the sheer joy I felt watching Star Wars: Attack of the Clones for the first time. Sure, Anakin Skywalker’s padawan training obviously did not include acting lessons, but this was a brand new Star Wars film on the big screen and there were enough breathtaking battles and cinematic moments to give me a two-hour adrenalin rush.

Rather than marking time before the main event of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, director George Lucas (Star Wars) threw plenty of memorable set pieces into the film – a flying car chase, the monster-crammed Petranaki Arena, and the subsequent Jedi battle.

In this film, we see how powerful the Jedi really are, from a sky-diving Anakin to a flipping little Yoda. The Jedi are almost too powerful, helping to explain – if not excuse – Order 66 in the sequel Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

It took a few more years for Sam to get into Star Wars. Now he’s graduated from college and the Nexu is his totem animal. He’s a big fan of Boba Fett, following the Young Boba books spun off from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and the violent bits in the movie don’t bother him one bit.

20 years after its release, the fight scenes are spectacular, the darker moments are still mesmerising, and Sir Christopher Lee (Count Dooku) is sadly missed. Hayden Christensen’s casting aside, Lucas tells another mythic story with symbolism that is easy to absorb whatever your age, appealing characters and enough dialogue to inspire an army of memes for decades to come.

What are your memories of watching Star Wars: Attack of the Clones? Let me know in the comments below.

Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer on Star Wars Day

"May the 4th be with you!" Lucasfilm has dropped an official trailer for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi on Star Wars Day, teasing a rematch between the titular Jedi Master and his fallen apprentice, Darth Vader.

Read the official synopsis:

"The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader."

The upcoming 6-part Star Wars special event series, directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian), sees Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader) reprise their roles from George Lucas' prequel trilogy. The Book of Boba Fett utilised flashbacks and how cool would it be to see Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in their prime alongside Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) during The Clone Wars?

As with previous Star Wars merchandising events Force Friday and Bring Home the Bounty, Lucasfilm has announced "Obi-Wan Wednesdays". New products from Hasbro, LEGO, Mattel and more will be announced each week starting 25th May through 29th June.

“Star Wars fans are gearing up for a fresh look at the roots of the iconic battle between the light side and dark side with Obi-Wan Kenobi, and these new products will give them a chance to revisit favorite characters, as well as celebrate new moments as this epic story continues,” said Paul Southern, senior vice president, Franchise & Licensing, Lucasfilm, Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing.

In related news. Apple has released a film to celebrate Star Wars Day. Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound. Showing fans (myself included) how the talented artists at Skywalker Sound use Mac to bring to life sounds from the Star Wars universe and beyond.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres with two episodes exclusively on Disney+ on 27th May.

Star Wars in Total Film

With only a few weeks to go until Star Wars Celebration and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+, Total Film magazine has released exclusive images from the latest live-action spin-off series set in a galaxy far, far away...

Much was made of the Grand Inquisitor's (Rupert Friend) appearance in the teaser trailer for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Frankly, the fan-favourite big bad from Star Wars Rebels looks ready to hunt down and destroy all remaining Jedi.

Obi-Wan Kenobi sees Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader) reprise their roles from George Lucas' prequel trilogy. Disney+ is the perfect platform to fully explore the tragedy of Obi-Wan Kenobi's greatest failure: losing Anakin Skywalker to the dark side and the rise of an evil Empire.

"It was nice to come back and to bridge that gap between me and Alec Guinness. I got as much, or more, out of playing him this time than I did in the first three movies put together," McGregor told Total Film magazine. "That’s to do with the writing, and the people we were making the series with, and the technology, and how different everything is."

In an interview with Total Film, director Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) debunked an appearance from Darth Maul and explained the rationale behind bringing back Darth Vader.

“For anybody trying to tell a story in the middle of these two trilogies, there were only certain elements that made sense in where [Obi-Wan] is,” Chow said. “With a lot of the legacy aspects, the decision to bring Vader into it was not made lightly. We’re 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. Where is Obi-Wan’s starting place? What has been important to him in his life? Anakin and Vader are a huge and very profound part of his life. We ended up feeling that he made sense in telling this story. And Vader casts such a dark shadow in this, that to have Maul as well, it might be a little bit much.”

Christensen will appear next in the Star Wars: Ahsoka spin-off series.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres with two episodes exclusively on Disney+ on 27th May.

Obi-Wan on 45th anniversary of Star Wars

Hello there! On Wednesday, The Book of Boba Fett had barely closed before Lucasfilm announced when Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi won't be released on Star Wars Day as many fans (myself included) thought. Instead, it will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the North American release of the original Star Wars movie directed by George Lucas.

Very little is known about the six-part special event series set a decade after the cataclysmic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. However, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen will reprise the roles of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader respectively.

"I always felt there was a story between Episode III where I finished playing Obi-Wan in the movies and Episode IV where Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi," Ewan McGregor said during an interview with Forbes magazine.

Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie. Edgerton and Piesse played the ill-fated Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru respectively in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres exclusively on Disney+ on 25th May.

Obi-Wan Kenobi first look on Disney+ Day

"Obi-Wan once thought as you do..." During the first-ever Disney+ Day celebration, Lucasfilm has officially released a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off series after the sizzle reel leaked online yesterday.

Very little is known about the special event series directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian).

“We couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader,” teases the director in the exclusive preview on Disney+.

It's fair to assume the long-standing theory that Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) will duel Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) before Star Wars: A New Hope, as implied in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, will be proven correct. Also, Inquisitors?

“It’s not safe,” Chow says. “There’s Jedi hunters out there.”

Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie. Edgerton and Piesse played the ill-fated Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru respectively in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

In related news. Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett documentary is now streaming on Disney+, and the sequel to Willow is currently in production with Warwick Davis reprising the titular role.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi streams exclusively on Disney+ in 2022 along with the third season of The Mandalorian. The Book of Boba Fett debuts this December on Disney+.

I'm ready to see the former friends' duel again, are you? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch mid-season peek

Star Wars: The Bad Batch, a spin-off from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, reaches its mid-season with Clone Force 99 and Omega pursued by an emergent Empire aided by fellow clone and former comrade, Crosshair.

The animated series doesn't shy away from darker themes in the wake of Emperor Palpatine's Order 66 in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

"It's exciting that I get to continue that story and tell a little bit more about what happens to the clones," series head writer and executive producer Jennifer Corbett told StarWars.com. "That's why I feel bad for Crosshair and all the clones. He didn’t have a choice. The chip was planted and none of them have a say in what they did. He's an interesting character. I can't wait for you to see where it goes."

New episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch premiere every Friday exclusively on Disney+.

Star Wars: Droids coming to Disney+

The Star Wars Vintage Collection launched in April on Disney+ with the Ewoks television movies and animated spin-offs as part of Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary celebration.

According to the latest Disney+ newsletter, Star Wars: Droids, which was announced for later this year, will be added on 18th June.

I remember watching Star Wars: Droids on Children's BBC around the launch of the original Star Wars trilogy on VHS. All 13 episodes (including the special) of the fan-favourite animated spin-off series, following the adventures of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 retroactively between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope, will be available to stream.

In related news. Star Wars: A Droid Story is currently in production for Disney+.

Are you looking forward to seeing Star Wars: Droids on Disney+? Let me know in the comments below.

Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Bad Batch?

Star Wars: The Bad Batch premieres on 4th May AKA Star Wars Day on Disney+.

Matt Lanter played Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Clone Wars for seven seasons and has teased the character's return in an upcoming animated spin-off series.

"There's some new Lucasfilm Animation going on. I've been a part of some things I can't talk about yet. You'll see Anakin again," Lanter told Entertainment Weekly (EW). "I never quite put Anakin down, whether I'm doing a video game or something new for Lucasfilm Animation."

In related news. Hayden Christensen reprises the role of Anakin Skywalker in the upcoming live-action special event series Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch begins with a 70-minute special on 4th May. New episodes drop weekly exclusively on Disney+ from Friday 7th May.

Do you think Anakin Skywalker will appear in Star Wars: The Bad Batch? Let me know in the comments below.

Obi-Wan Kenobi series surpasses prequels

It's Star Wars Day soon (coinciding with my first dose of the coronavirus vaccine) and spin-off series Obi-Wan Kenobi has begun filming in Los Angeles for release in 2022 on Disney+.

Ewan McGregor spoke to The Hollywood Reporter (THR) about reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequels.

McGregor reiterated his criticism of Star Wars creator George Lucas’ approach to filmmaking on the 'not very much liked' prequel trilogy.

“He wanted more and more control over what we see in the background,” McGregor said. “After three or four months of that, it just gets really tedious — especially when the scenes are… I don’t want to be rude, but it’s not Shakespeare. There’s not something to dig into in the dialogue that can satisfy you when there’s no environment there. It was quite hard to do.”

McGregor praised ILM's StageCraft utilised for The Mandalorian, which is the culmination of technology developed by Lucasfilm. The Disney-owned production company, founded by George Lucas, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

“If you’re in a desert, you’re standing in the middle of a desert,” McGregor said of the LED-based virtual set technology. “If you’re in the snow, you’re surrounded by snow. And if you’re in a cockpit of a starfighter, you’re in space. It’s going to feel so much more real.”

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is set a decade after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and there's a suggestion of a rematch with Anakin Skywalker AKA Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).

"I'm really excited about it," he says. "Maybe more so than the first ones, because I'm older — I just turned 50 — and I'm just in a much better place."

Are you hoping for lots of lightsaber action? Let me know in the comments below.

What will you be watching first from the Star Wars Vintage Collection on Disney+? Let me know in the comments below.

Obi-Wan Kenobi series begins filming April

The main cast for the latest Disney+ live-action Star Wars spin-off is announced as production ramps up in Los Angeles with director Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) at the helm.

Obi-Wan Kenobi sees Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader) reprise their roles from George Lucas' prequel trilogy and utilises the Volume, an LED-based virtual set technology developed (by former Lucasfilm staffers) for The Mandalorian.

The official synopsis for the special event series:

“The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”

Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.

Edgerton and Piesse played the ill-fated Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru respectively in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. So, we may see Kenobi keeping a watchful eye over a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine before facing Darth Vader, again, in the hopes of turning his friend and former apprentice back to the light side of the Force.

Obi-Wan Kenobi begins filming in April and is expected to stream exclusively on Disney+ sometime in 2022 along with the third season of The Mandalorian. The Book of Boba Fett debuts this December on Disney+.

Boba Fett, Ewoks and Clone Wars on Disney+

With over 100 million subscribers, Disney+ is expected to overtake Netflix in the next few years and take its rightful place as the supreme power of the universe... OK! That's stretching things somewhat, but The Walt Disney Company's streaming service is benefitting from consumers staying at home during the global pandemic.

The addition of the Star brand, in non-US markets, has added a wealth of content from Twentieth Century Fox's film and television library. During a recent Zoom call, a friend and relative newcomer to streaming mentioned they hadn't realised how much there was and that they would continue to subscribe to Disney+ for the foreseeable future.

And now, with barely a whisper, mid-eighties Lucasfilm curios Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, which I know will excite fans including our very own Andrew Lewin (this may not be the truth), are being added for your viewing pleasure. I'll never forget walking into a family friend's rental video store and discovering there were movies post-Star Wars: Return of the Jedi! You want more Ewoks? There's Star Wars: Ewoks, an animated series that ran for two seasons, set before Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Along with The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, the famed animated sequence from the Star Wars Holiday Special introducing Boba Fett before Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Genndy Tartakovsky's Star Wars: Clone Wars.

The Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series, running from 2003 to 2005 on Cartoon Network, bridged events between Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. When Star Wars: The Clone Wars began in 2008, Tartakovsky didn't return.

Are you looking forward to more vintage Star Wars this April on Disney+? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi begins filming soon

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi begins filming in Los Angeles this spring with director Deborah Chow (Lost in Space) at the helm.

The latest Disney+ live-action Star Wars spin-off sees Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) reprise their roles from George Lucas' prequel trilogy and utilises the Volume, an LED-based virtual set technology developed (by former Lucasfilm staffers) for The Mandalorian.

"It'll just be great to do it again. It's so funny, I did my last one in 2003 and it's such a long time ago and the idea of doing it again now is just more exciting than it was then, I think," McGregor said. "I'm thrilled to get the chance to play him again. I've always felt there was a story about between my ones and Alec Guinness' ones and that's what we're gonna do. It should be really interesting."

Following the cataclysmic events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi went into hiding on Tatooine to watch over and protect Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

However, there's scope for interplanetary adventures and a second face-off with Darth Vader! In Return of the Jedi, Vader tells young Skywalker that Kenobi tried to turn him back to the light side of the Force.

Are you looking forward to the new live-action Star Wars spin-off series set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars fan film: Prequel Trilogy remake

It's New Year's Eve and most of the UK is now in tier 4 (the highest level of restrictions) due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tim Hoekstra, from New Zealand-based Knights of Renesmee, got in touch to 'shamelessly plug' his latest Star Wars fan film, a 6-hour prequel movie marathon filmed during the lockdown, that will help pass the time until 2021. How could I refuse?

I asked Tim: "What was the inspiration and, more importantly, is there going to be a holiday special in 2021?"

"The Star Wars Holiday Special would be extremely fertile ground haha. We'll see..." You heard it here first, folks! Tim went on to explain the creative impulse behind the shot-for-shot remake of Star Wars creator George Lucas' prequel trilogy. "We started almost 4 years ago with Revenge of the Sith, filming it over 5 days (it was holidays, we were bored and none of us had jobs). Our motivation was largely to have fun hanging out which I think you can see in our film. Another motivation was to make something nostalgic we could look back on in 10 years when we all have kids/families etc. After releasing it to Youtube and getting ~50 views in the first week, I woke up one morning and found it on Youtube trending with 100'000 views and from there, completing the trilogy was inevitable..."

If you have a fan film you'd like to share, please contact me.
