Hayley Atwell plays the villain in Fable

Sunday's XBOX Games Showcase, the first with Asha Sharma at the helm, celebrated 25 years of play with XBOX!

From Fable to Gears of War: E-Day, it harkened back to the original XBOX and XBOX 360 eras! It's worth noting that these titles were in development when Phil Spencer was the head of XBOX.

During the XBOX Games Showcase, pre-order details and a release date trailer dropped for Fable.

Read the official synopsis:

"Become the Hero you want to be in an immersive open-world action-RPG where each choice shapes your journey, reputation is everything, and fairytale endings are never guaranteed."

Fable is a beloved fantasy role-playing game franchise, and Playground Games' (Forza) reboot stars Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) as the villain, Isobel. Talking to XBOX Wire, Fable Associate Narrative Director Craig Owens explained why Atwell was cast:

“Hayley’s ability to combine vulnerability with strength made her the perfect person to play Isabel, and working with her was a real pleasure. Her desire to really dig into the character and deliver the best possible performance in every scene blew us all away, not just on the performance capture stage but in the voice recording booth, where her classical training was on full display. Hayley brought a dedication, seriousness and grit to the role that, in many ways, mirrors the character’s own.”

Whilst Sharma has hit the reset button on the XBOX brand with a pivot back to exclusives, including Gears of War: E-Day, Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable will be available on the PlayStation 5 (PS5).

Fable will be released on PlayStation 5 (PS5), XBOX Series X|S and PC on 23rd February 2027.

More than 25 years after her debut, Lara Croft will once again don her fingerless gloves to reclaim ancient relics in the new animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, hitting Netflix on 10th October.

Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

"Another visitor - stay a while - stay forever!" Oops! Wrong franchise. That's from Impossible Mission, a classic 8-bit video game originally released for the Commodore 64.

No, we're here for the latest instalment in the rebooted Mission: Impossible franchise starring Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick).

Nick Smith, our US-based stellar scribe, leaves the hat and whip behind for an explosive mission with Marvel Studios' Agent Carter, I mean Grace (Hayley Atwell). This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds...

Guest post by Nick Smith

With Britain’s most conspicuous secret agent pushing up daisies and Mission: Impossible’s original hero Jim Phelps dead on the wrong side of the tracks, Ethan Hunt really is ‘the world’s greatest spy,’ as billed by Paramount. Ethan Hunt, as played by Tom Cruise, certainly has plenty of experience – it’s been a whopping 27 years since the first movie was released. We’ve seen Hunt get beaten, slashed, John Woo'ed, disavowed and dangled horizontally from a long rope on more than one occasion.

In the seventh M: I instalment, Hunt goes rogue (again) in search of a key to unlock… well, he doesn’t know, and if that isn’t the definition of impossible I don’t know what is. This plot device provides plenty of opportunities for fights, car chases, betrayals and lots of running. So much running.

We’ve seen it all before, of course, in the long-running TV show, the previous M: I films and countless other beat-‘em-up spy flicks. But director Christopher McQuarrie (M: I Rogue Nation and Fallout) makes the action seem fresh and entertaining while including some grown-up talky scenes, especially in the first half. There’s a good mix of modern-day themes and old-school tropes reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock classics like The 39 Steps and North by Northwest.

There are some sweet callbacks to the original film: Henry Czerny, who plays spy boss Kittridge, is back after a five-movie gap; Vanessa Kirby is the White Widow, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave’s character Max. Kittridge asks Hunt what side he’s on, echoing Jim Phelps’ shifting allegiance in the ’96 adventure.

Kirby fills Redgrave’s shoes eloquently, giving just enough nuance to stand out in a strong roster of actresses. As outlaw Ilsa Faust, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) gets an epic fight scene on a Venetian bridge. Marvel maven Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) is Grace, the thief with a heart of stolen gold, who causes lots of problems (and drags out the narrative) with her sticky fingers. The film’s only flaw is Grace’s stubbornness, which leads to some roundabout scenes as Hunt tries to convince her to risk her life for the Impossible Mission Force (IMF). How can she possibly resist the Cruise charm offensive?

Supporting characters in spy movies tend to be dull these days. Thankfully, Ving Rhames (portraying Luther Stickell, Hunt’s teammate since M: I1) and Simon Pegg (as Benji Dunn, who first appeared in M: I3) are both present to add some humanity and humour to proceedings. Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) is the waspish Denlinger, and it’s a joy to see Mark Gatiss (Sherlock’s Mycroft Holmes), as American as can be, in a bigwig NSA role. Esai Morales (an unmemorable Deathstroke in Titans) is the malicious Gabriel, an unwelcome blast from Hunt’s past. All the cast members give broad performances that help give Dead Reckoning an epic Hollywood feel.

There are just enough comedic moments to keep the adventure bubbling along, and McQuarrie’s not afraid to show his influences – Hitchcock, James Bond (especially with a Huntless opening sequence involving a submarine) and John Wick (there’s some European neon club combat, albeit with an unexpected twist).

We are doubtless in the hands of a master storyteller; McQuarrie wrote The Unusual Suspects, Edge of Tomorrow and Top Gun: Maverick, as well as revising Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Despite the high-stakes seriousness of the main plot and a tragedy or two, there’s the sense that the writer/director is having fun with this movie, especially during its far-fetched third act.

Cruise’s stunts keep us grounded; he’s really speeding on a bike, jumping off a cliff and flying through the air with wind pummelling his face. The characters face relatable moral dilemmas, and the IMF learns that reliance on technology can be very dangerous indeed.

The Mission: Impossible TV show was audaciously cinematic in its day, partly because its second unit camera team would go above and beyond filming inserts and extra bits to include in each tense episode.

With Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise is playing the long game; he spent years planning a showpiece stunt and the film has been teased for several months. When Part Two is released in the UK and the US on June 28th, 2024, it will be hard-pressed to top the close calls and thrill rides of Part One but for once, time is on Ethan Hunt’s side.

Hayley Atwell is Lara Croft on Netflix

I vividly remember watching Captain America: The First Avenger and thinking Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) should play Lara Croft in a live-action Tomb Raider reboot! Incidentally, The First Avenger is notable for a pre-Doctor Who cameo by Jenna Coleman.

Ultimately, the big screen baton was passed from Angelina Jolie to Alicia Vikander as Atwell continued to reprise her role as fan-favourite Agent Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Atwell has now been cast as the titular character for Netflix's animated spin-off series. It will follow the events of Square Enix's Tomb Raider video game trilogy, which starred Camilla Luddington as the archaeological heroine inspired by Indiana Jones.

Tomb Raider celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. However, there's no news on when the animated series will debut on Netflix.

But even as she discovers new friends, a new home — and perhaps even a new love — she’s about to find out that the bright lights of the post-war Hollywood mask a more sinister threat to everyone she is sworn to protect.”

ABC renews Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter

ABC has renewed both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter after seemingly nixing plans for a rumoured S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off series. The spin-off was thought to focus on Lance Hunter and Bobbi 'Mockingbird' Morse.

Agent Carter's first season garnered rave reviews, but has yet to be broadcast in the UK after being passed on by Channel Four. Perhaps the success of Daredevil may persuade Netflix to stream the series. I've reached out to the streaming service and will update if a response is forthcoming.

Meanwhile Marvel's arch-rival DC Comics is on spectacular form with its live-action television franchises. Arrow and The Flash continue to win deserved praise and will soon be bolstered by DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Marvel's Agent Carter gets first TV Spot

Following the Marvel Event, which heralded the announcement of 8 movies spanning the next five years, the first TV Spot for Agent Carter has been revealed. Can Peggy Carter hold her own in a television schedule boasting Arrow, Constantine, Gotham and The Flash?

ABC presents its second action packed series from the creative minds at Marvel in “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” inspired by the feature films Marvel’s "Captain America: The First Avenger" and Marvel’s "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," along with the short "Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter."

Years before Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team swore to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive, there was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell, Marvel's "Captain America: The First Avenger," Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"), who pledged the same oath but lived in a different time when women weren’t recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts.

But no one should ever underestimate Peggy.

It's 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field; putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America.

When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel's "Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy - the only person he can trust - to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy.

If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.

Agent Carter's eight-episode mini-series begins this January on ABC. No news regarding UK transmission dates.

Marvel's Agent Carter

It's fair to say Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. got interesting and then some in the wake of The Winter Soldier. The series is to be renewed for a second season and Captain America's Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell) gets her own spin-off.

Official description of the new series from ABC:

“Marvel’s Agent Carter,” starring “Captain America’s” Hayley Atwell follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” along with the short “Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.” “Marvel’s Agent Carter” stars Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter. Executive producers are Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, Steve McFeely & Christopher Marcus, and Jeph Loeb.

ABC isn't pulling any punches and Marvel fans have much look forward to including a new Netflix series too.
