Star Wars Outlaws on Game Pass

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws has arrived on Game Pass two years after its release.

The action-adventure game was initially met with a muted response due to bugs and gameplay mechanics that frustrated some players. However, those issues have been fixed in subsequent patches.

Over the weekend, I downloaded Star Wars Outlaws on Xbox Series S and soon found myself fully immersed in this single-player open-world adventure set between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. In this galactic underworld of my choosing, Kay Vess is aligned with the Crimson Dawn, an organisation founded by former Sith Lord Darth Maul, and double-crossed the Hutts.

As long as you're not looking for a spiritual successor to the cancelled Star Wars 1313, there's a lot of fun to be had here. It's Assassin's Creed in a galaxy far, far away...

A prequel book, Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon, is available for pre-order from Amazon (affiliate link).

Darth Vader's lightsaber sells for millions

Darth Vader's legendary lightsaber sets a new auction record for Star Wars.

The iconic character’s screen-matched primary duelling lightsaber that was used in the films Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi sold for $3,654,000 when it hit the block from Propstore in Los Angeles on Thursday, becoming the highest-valued piece from the Star Wars franchise ever up for auction. The winning bid came in at a franchise record of $2,900,000 and reached the final total with the additional buyer’s premium that is paid to the auction house.

Brandon Alinger, the COO of the auction house Propstore, which hosted the sale, remarked, "Darth Vader, of course, arguably the most memorable villain of all time. And this is his weapon, the weapon of cinema's most infamous, recognizable, unforgettable villain."

This is said to be the only hero lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy to ever hit an auction. The Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction coincides with this year, marking the 45th anniversary of the release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

For the fortunate Star Wars fan who claimed Darth Vader's lightsaber, may the Force be with you.

Star Wars fans urged to back Boba Fett

Appearing at the Tampa Bay Comic Convention, Temuera Morrison, who has played bounty hunters Jango Fett and Boba Fett, was asked about his involvement in future Star Wars projects.

“No,” Morrison answered. “We really have to treasure those moments now. All of you need to send a fax, or a letter or an email to those powers-that-be at Lucasfilm. I’m sure they’d love to hear from everyone. Please give Daniel Logan and Temuera Morrison another chance and put them somewhere.”

The enigmatic and mysterious mercenary Boba Fett was first introduced in an animated segment during the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. However, most fans (outside the US) wouldn't have known about him until Kenner's mail-away action figure promotion before appearing in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, played by the late Jeremy Bulloch.

The bounty hunter's apparent demise in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was less than satisfactory and was used mostly for comedic effect. A school friend and I were left nonplussed and, wrongly, assumed he'd escape moments after the Rebels had destroyed Jabba's Sail Barge as creator George Lucas rushed to tie up loose ends leftover from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and sell more toys.

Daniel Logan, who played a young Boba Fett in the prequel trilogy and appeared alongside Morrison on the panel, reflected on his experience being part of the Star Wars franchise.

"The crazy part with Star Wars is that you don’t know about filming anything until like, a week, or maybe two, or even less than that, right?" he said.

"But the thing is, Temuera is the greediest person in Star Wars. He’s played so many characters, he’s got the most characters in Star Wars, if you go down the line — from Jango, Boba, all of the Clones, Rex, Cody, Fives — he’s got the most characters in Star Wars."

Logan added, "There’s going to be plenty of opportunities. Especially for this guy, especially with this era of Star Wars, like Ahsoka, and all this stuff set after Return of the Jedi."

Morrison last played the fan-favourite bounty hunter in The Book of Boba Fett and confirmed he won't be appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu movie next year.

If you hadn't already guessed, Boba Fett's one of my favourite characters from the franchise and the 12-inch action figure was a cherished Christmas gift from childhood - I was too excited to sleep after discovering Santa had left a smuggler's bounty on the landing.

Would you like to see the return of Boba Fett? Let me know in the comments below.

Adam Savage stunned by Star Wars garage kit

Growing up, Star Wars model kits gave fans (myself included) an insight into how Lucasfilm's award-winning Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) division made movie magic.

After school, I would spend countless hours assembling and painting detailed replicas and dioramas from MPC/Ertl and Revell, which informed a lifelong love of the creative arts.

Adam Savage (MythBusters) painstakingly examines the original AT-ST, affectionately known as the "chicken walker", from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Read the official synopsis:

"Star Wars model kit time! After building and painting the incredible studio scale AT-AT Walker garage kit from Merlin Models, Adam tackles the new 1/24 scale AT-ST Scout Walker as seen in the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. But this is no ordinary garage kit--Adam and Norm find a combination of cast and machined parts that recreate the posable metal armature the ILM Model Shop built for the original stop-motion puppet!"

This is a must-see for fellow Star Wars fans and anyone with a modicum of interest in moviemaking. Of particular note is the AT-AT attack, which uses stop-motion animation pioneered by Ray Harryhausen.

40 years of Atari's Star Wars

This month marks the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Atari's Star Wars arcade game.

It's summer 1983, and my family have stopped for a break at Gordano Services, Bristol. Clasping a cherished copy of Peter Davison's Book of Alien Monsters, I wander into a smoky, neon-lit arcade after hearing Obi-Wan Kenobi's digitised voice! A childhood dream of becoming Luke Skywalker and flying an X-wing into the Death Star trench is within my grasp as I step inside the cockpit...

The classic Atari title, with its dazzling vector graphics and use of original music, sound effects and dialogue from Star Wars, was soon followed by Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi arcade games.

Star Wars Insider issue #218 features an interview with Mike Hally, project leader on Atari's arcade classic.

“We had a research group led by Rick Moncrief, and a guy on his team named Jed Margolin was developing this hardware called ‘warp speed.’ It was 3D vector hardware that wasn’t really being built for a game, but I took a look at it and thought, ‘Man, this would be perfect for Star Wars.’ So, I worked up a proposal, and Atari approved me being in charge of it,” Hally smiles. “I remember getting to work and being very excited.”

What self-respecting Star Wars fan wouldn't want to pilot an X-wing, dogfight with TIE Fighters and destroy the first dreaded Death Star?

“To me it was really, really simple. I mean, the whole climax of the movie was about Luke Skywalker flying his X-wing, shooting TIE fighters, trying to get down to the Death Star past the gun turrets, and then diving into the trench to get to the exhaust port,” Hally says. “It was perfect for a video game.”

Atari's arcade game spawned clones for 8-bit home computers. I remember playing 3D Starstrike on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum whilst listening to John Williams' Star Wars soundtracks and surrounded by Star Wars toys. Incidentally, Parker Brothers released official Star Wars game cartridges for the Atari VCS. I have fond memories of holding off AT-AT walkers in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with fellow Rebel and childhood friend Kevin Simpson.

LEGO Executor Super Star Destroyer

LEGO Star Wars micro-scale builds are ideal for mindful moments. And fan-favourite Executor Super Star Destroyer is going to be an excellent addition to any desk or bookshelf display on Star Wars Day!

Darth Vader's flagship Super Star Destroyer first appeared in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. This new LEGO Star Wars building set commemorates the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and is much more affordable and occupies far less space than the UCS Super Star Destroyer.

LEGO Star Wars Executor Super Star Destroyer is available from LEGO AU, CA, UK and US (affiliate links).

LEGO Star Wars Diorama series

In time for Star Wars Day, LEGO has announced a new Star Wars Diorama series for adult collectors based on classic scenes from the original trilogy.

“For years we’ve been scratching our heads about how to capture the Death Star trash compactor, an extremely iconic scene, in LEGO bricks,” Michael Lee Stockwell, LEGO Star Wars design manager, tells StarWars.com. “But what good is a trash compactor that doesn’t ‘compact’? We needed the function!”

The first wave of sets, comprising the LEGO Star Wars Death Star Trash Compactor, the LEGO Star Wars Death Star Trench Run Diorama, and the LEGO Star Wars Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama, would look great on any fan's bookshelf.

“The Diorama series is really something special, and something we are very excited about,” says Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, LEGO Star Wars design director. “The models are built on a frame. On the frame there is a small, printed plaque with a famous phrase from that particular movie scene. The frame is always the same depth — 20 LEGO modules, which is a perfect size, as it makes it fit on a regular bookshelf. So they’re perfect for display.”

The LEGO Star Wars Diorama series is available from LEGO AU, UK and US (affiliate links).

Will you be adding these LEGO Star Wars Diorama sets to your collection? Which sets would you like to see in the future? Let me know in the comments below.

Boba Fett escapes the Sarlacc Pit

The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+ finally showed Star Wars fans (myself included) how the titular bounty hunter, played by Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones), escaped from the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Some hot takes on social media suggested he should have stayed in there! Oof!

Whereas The Mandalorian was an unknown quantity and the first live-action Star Wars spin-off series on Disney+. Boba Fett has been a fan-favourite since his appearance in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Yes, the enigmatic and morally ambiguous mercenary was first introduced in an animated segment during the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. However, most fans (outside the US) wouldn't have known about him until Kenner's mail-away action figure promotion.

The bounty hunter's apparent demise in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was less than satisfactory and was used mostly for comedic effect. A school friend and I were left nonplussed and, wrongly, assumed he'd escape moments after the Rebels had destroyed Jabba's Sail Barge as creator George Lucas rushed to tie up loose ends leftover from the best Star Wars sequel and sell more toys.

Well, in flashback, as the bounty hunter healed from his injuries in a bacta tank, Boba Fett managed to singlehandedly escape using his flamethrower before having his Mandalorian armour stolen by Jawas, Tatooine's omnipresent scavengers, after he passed out.

Personally, this made sense as he was a brutal and inventive bounty hunter.

Later, Boba Fett is captured by marauding Tusken Raiders and embarks on adventures lifted from the pages of classic Star Wars comics with knowing nods to the franchise's storied history and stop-motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first fleeting episode. It pulls from Star Wars Legends' Tales of the Bounty Hunters. The episodic format of the Disney+ series lends itself to richer storytelling, and I'm glad the planned Boba Fett movie spin-off was shelved after Solo: A Star Wars Story.

UK tabloid newspaper The Sun alleges Harrison Ford took a break from filming Lucasfilm stablemate Indiana Jones 5 to record a scene for The Book of Boba Fett. Make of that what you will. A de-aged Mark Hamill appeared in the second season finale of The Mandalorian. So, anything is possible.

George Lucas asked Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer) to create a cool character for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, which he did and then some. I'm sure Robert Rodriguez, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni won't let Boba Fett or his fans down. A flashback featuring Darth Vader would be a welcome early birthday present.

New episodes of The Book of Boba Fett premiere every Wednesday exclusively on Disney+.

The Book of Boba Fett opens on Disney+

Boba Fett’s back to spread mercenary holiday cheer!

40 years ago, I was gifted a 12-inch Boba Fett action figure for Christmas! Palitoy's Slave 1 was one of the toys I always wanted from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, but Boba Fett’s spaceship (rechristened Firespray in Marvel Comics) was rarer than hen’s teeth in deepest, darkest, Devon.

However, the 12-inch Boba Fett action figure was beyond cool and hunted down Action Man's Space Ranger and ROM the Space Knight between battling the Rebel Alliance and pursuing lucrative bounties for Jabba the Hutt.

The Book of Boba Fett opens today and I couldn't be more excited for the latest live-action Star Wars spin-off on Disney+.

Read the official synopsis:

""The Book of Boba Fett," a thrilling Star Wars adventure teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the Season 2 finale of "The Mandalorian," finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate."

The Book of Boba Fett, starring Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones) as the titular bounty hunter and co-starring Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as fan-favourite Fennec Shand, premieres today exclusively on Disney+.

How did the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy escape the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? Finally, Star Wars fans (myself included) are about to find out.

Return of a Legend in The Book of Boba Fett

Crush the Rebels with LEGO Star Wars AT-AT

"Use your harpoons and tow cables!" I'll never forget the memory of unboxing an AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) toy one Christmas. The iconic Imperial Walker captured my childhood imagination in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and I'd entered a competition in Marvel UK's Star Wars Weekly without success.

This year, LEGO Star Wars fans (myself included) can build new holiday memories with LEGO AT-AT, the latest addition to the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS), when it goes on sale on 26th November.

This immense new LEGO model is massive in size and detail, paying homage to the gigantic vehicles in the film. It features 6,785 pieces, a movable head, spinning guns, adjustable legs, and side panels that open to reveal amazingly detailed interiors.

In addition, the set comes with nine minifigures and accessories, including Luke Skywalker (along with a wire so fans can recreate the famous scene of him swinging from an AT-AT’s underside in an attempt to thwart their attack), General Veers, two AT-AT drivers, a Snowtrooper Commander and four Snowtrooper minifigures, as well as two speeder bikes and an E-Web cannon set accessories — plus plenty of interactive elements and easter eggs! An amazing set for display or action, the set can also fit an army of Snowtrooper minifigures inside – 40 in total.

A must-have for any dedicated Star Wars fan, this model has been designed by legendary LEGO Design Master Henrik Andersen. Discussing the design, Andersen said, “The mega-sized LEGO Star Wars AT-AT set is the one everyone has been waiting for, and it’s been a thrill to bring this highly-anticipated build to life. The AT-AT was an engineering masterpiece and the LEGO set will make an impressive display. But we have also packed in plenty of details that will deliver hours of fun for fans of LEGO and Star Wars alike.”

To celebrate the release of the new LEGO Star Wars AT-AT set, selected LEGO stores in EMEA will be hosting exclusive midnight opening events, giving fans the opportunity to be the first to purchase the new set. Selected stores in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the Nordics will open their doors at 00:01 to 02:00 on the morning of Friday 26th November, allowing a limited number of fans to make their purchase. Fans will also receive a midnight opening special gift, plus they can browse the store and make other purchases.

The AT-AT is available from LEGO AU, UK and US (affiliate links).

The Book of Boba Fett official trailer

“If you had spoken such insolence to Jabba, he’d have fed you to his menagerie.” Lucasfilm has released the first official trailer for Disney+'s Star Wars live-action spin-off, The Book of Boba Fett.

Boba Fett captured the imagination of Star Wars fans (myself included) in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. However, the mysterious bounty hunter first appeared in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special during an animated short (available on Disney+). As I've written previously, my earliest memory of Boba Fett is as a mail-away action figure.

His apparent demise in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was, erm, anti-climatic. However, there's going to be flashbacks so we may see how he escapes from the Sarlacc pit (my action figure managed it on Exmouth beach in the school summer holidays).

In the trailer, Boba Fett appears far less scarred than he did in The Mandalorian, so must be using a bacta tank to heal.

The Book of Boba Fett, starring Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Attack of the Clones) as the titular bounty hunter and co-starring Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as fan-favourite Fennec Shand, premieres exclusively on 29th December on Disney+.

Marvel's summer of Star Wars

With only a few weeks to go until The Book of Boba Fett debuts on Disney+, Nick Smith, our US-based stellar scribe, catches up with the notorious bounty hunter in Marvel Comics.

Guest post by Nick Smith

"I will not give up my favourite decoration. I like Captain Solo where he is." – Jabba the Hutt

Recently my office has been decorated with copies of the Marvel Star Wars crossover, War of the Bounty Hunters. Nobody converges summer titles like Marvel – see Secret Wars, House of M and Civil War for evidence – and this year it’s Luke Skywalker’s turn to face his stablemates in books like Doctor Aphra, Darth Vader and IG-88.

Doctor Aphra is the weakest link, with a throwaway plot and underdeveloped characters. The saving grace is Federico Sabbatini’s art in issue 14 (‘Repeat Offenders’), echoing Cynthia Martin’s playful pencils on the original Star Wars comic.

Bounty Hunters and Darth Vader are both well-written, with stronger character development and a sense that there’s plenty of plot to unfold. Valance the hunter thinks there’s still a chance to save Han Solo, even though the smuggler is encased in carbonite and held by the Crimson Dawn syndicate.

Meanwhile, Vader apparently wants to prove himself to the Emperor before he’s usurped by Luke as Palpatine’s number one youngling killer. Ochi of Bestoon comes across as Star Wars’ answer to Deadpool, a wisecracking sidekick to the Lord of the Sith. The cast of Darth Vader all have their own agendas and shift alliances like the sand around a sarlacc.

Some of the major combatants in this war get their own one-shots, although Zuckuss and 4-LOM share an issue called ‘Zuckuss Must Die!’. We learn a lot about Zuckuss and his relationship with his droid buddy – which is not necessarily a good thing.

Like Boba Fett, part of the bounty hunters’ appeal is their mystery. They are alien, not like us with our concerns about friendship (Zuckuss), love (Dengar) or loyalty (Valance). Playing with their Kenner action figures, kids could insert these blank-slate characters into any scenario they wished. To humanize the hunters is to do them a disservice. But how else are the writers supposed to tell stories about these space-cold killers?

The flagship Star Wars comic continues to capture the feel of the original movie trilogy. Issue 15, ‘Friends and Enemies,’ revolves around a Starlight Squadron dogfight for that good old Beggar’s-Canyon-back-home feeling.

As crossovers go, there are scant new ideas and War of the Bounty Hunters feels exceptionally slow and dragged-out. The main plot doesn’t go anywhere for months at a time. The decision to centre the action around an auction in a non-linear fashion hobbles the writers, although they obviously have fun inserting their characters into a galactic bidding war for Han Solo.

Plus we know how events will turn out since editors Mark Paniccia and Tom Groneman announced that the very first issue in this series would shed, ‘new light on Boba’s journey from Cloud City to Tatooine.’

Whilst this particular war doesn’t merit dozens of issues, it does provide some great set pieces worthy of George Lucas’ classic saga. It offers a chance to see 4-LOM become a giant metal spider, reveals Boushh’s background and shows how Chewbacca feels about Lando after Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

The overall quality of the storytelling and art bodes well for the comics once they’re free from being mashed between two immutable movies.

The Book of Boba Fett opens December

The Book of Boba Fett, teased at the end of The Mandalorian second season finale, premieres exclusively on 29th December on Disney+.

This is a little later than many fans (myself included) expected and misses the countdown to Christmas. However, Marvel Studios' Hawkeye will be on hand this Thanksgiving.

Here's the official synopsis for the highly-anticipated Star Wars spin-off this holiday season:

"The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate."

More details about The Book of Boba Fett will be revealed during the first-ever Disney+ Day, which celebrates the 2nd anniversary of the launch of The Walt Disney Company's streaming service. There's also a documentary on the infamous bounty hunter who captured Han Solo in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

What Boba Fett did next...

It's the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire and whilst we wait for The Book of Boba Fett this Christmas on Disney+, Marvel Comics takes us back to a time between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in War of the Bounty Hunters.

Our very own US-based stellar scribe, Nick Smith, grabs his latest comic book bounty, from TBS Comics in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and goes in pursuit of the infamous Boba Fett.

Guest post by Nick Smith

It’s a story as old as that galaxy far, far away – a protagonist does a favour for a friend in lieu of payment and has to face a series of challenges, eventually finding that the favour could prove fatal thanks to an obstacle that’s bigger and more threatening than he ever expected.

However, in War of the Bounty Hunters, that protagonist is the legendary Boba Fett and the payment concerns that scruffy Corellian smuggler Han Solo. “Precious Cargo,” from Marvel Comics, sets off a chain of events that will span what’s being described as the biggest crossover in Star Wars comics history, filling all 4 monthly titles and a dedicated title (War of the Bounty Hunters). In all, it will take more than 30 issues to tell this story through October 2021. Boushh and IG-88 will get their own comics, while 4-LOM and Zuckuss have to share one.

“Precious Cargo” kicks off five preludes to the war, opening with Boba in his ship Slave 1 [Disney's subsequently renamed it as Boba Fett's Starship - Ed]. He’s just left Bespin with Han encased in carbonite and he’s en route for Tatooine where Solo will become Jabba the Hutt’s favourite decoration. Since The Empire Strikes Back focuses on Luke Skywalker, we’ve never seen What Fett Did Next – until now.

In this kind of crossover, there is no possible character progression for Boba, and the story’s conclusion is inevitable; we know Solo will end up with Jabba. The fun lies in finding out why the other bounty hunters, as well as Luke and the gang, are involved in the war, along with Valance the Cyborg, Domina Tagge and Doctor Aphra. Since the latter three are Marvel creations, they can be further developed. Their fates are unknown to us. Those characters are given just enough traits and twists to keep us reading.

Boba’s situation is complicated thanks to some gangland entanglements with the Kanji Hutts and it becomes apparent that his journey to Tatooine won’t be a straight run. Over in Star Wars issue 13, the rebel alliance searches for their carbon-cosy pal in “The Hunt for Han Solo.” They’re one issue behind Boba so they don’t catch up with him or his cargo. But they, too, face the Kanji. With an image of Boba on a wall and the good guys facing aliens, the cover of this story is reminiscent of the original Star Wars issue 7.

Next up is Bounty Hunters issue 12, which develops the relationship between Valance and Han Solo; and Darth Vader issue 12, continuing a captivating conflict between the Dark Lord of the Sith and his Emperor. The animosity between them makes Vader’s ultimate betrayal of his master less sudden and more believable in Return of the Jedi.

The final prelude is in Doctor Aphra issue 10. Although Aphra is a character with great potential – imagine a Lucasfilm version of Lara Croft, Tomb Raider – “The Invitation” feels the least like a Star Wars story, despite its stomping Stormtroopers and exploding machinery. There’s no direct mention of the Han Solo situation and we’re launched into a confusing situation, even with a ‘story so far’ at the beginning of the book. If you’re not familiar with Aphra’s past and her allies, beware.

Despite this weak link, the War of the Bounty Hunters saga has strong artwork, entertaining characters and situations, and Star Wars references aplenty. Whether that’s enough to hold our attention through 34 comics remains to be seen. But fans have plenty to look forward to in these ‘deleted scenes’ from The Book of Boba Fett, which will lead to Marvel’s contemporary take on Return of the Jedi.

Darth Vader crashes classical concert

That moment when Darth Vader, flanked by Imperial Stormtroopers, crashes a classical concert and stays for a rousing rendition of veteran Star Wars composer John Williams' The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme) from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Clearly, the Dark Lord of the Sith was impressed by the Russian State Cinema Symphony Orchestra's performance, at the Moscow Conservatory, in 2015. So much so, he didn't Force choke the conductor when the original Death Star exploded on screen...
