Maul is a Star Wars thrill ride on Disney+

On Thursday, Lucasfilm dropped a teaser trailer for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord on Disney+.

Read the official synopsis:

"Chains can be broken. Empires can be shattered."

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is created by Dave Filoni, based on Star Wars and characters created by George Lucas. The series is developed by Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz. Brad Rau is the supervising director.

The executive producers are Dave Filoni, Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes. Alex Spotswood is the co-executive producer.

The voice cast includes Sam Witwer as Maul, Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David C. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok, and Steve Blum as Icarus.

“Cinematography Lighting & VFX Director Joel Aron really took it up a notch with going back to the practical ways of capturing brush strokes by painting them on glass, shooting them then strategically placing them in shots,” says Executive Producer and Vice President of Lucasfilm Animation Athena Portillo. "He even went back to establishing matte paintings on canvas. There's always different challenges with every show that we do, but this one in particular raised the bar. We also wanted the animation body mechanics and the facial to be more fluid from our previous work and animation director Keith Kellogg worked closely with CGCG and our internal animation team to upgrade the performances of our main characters."

Set after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could be the apprentice he is seeking, that will aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.

“And it’s a super fast-paced series,” adds Executive Producer Matt Michnovetz. “We wanted to create an action-packed thrill ride, something that had the rush of a roller coaster, so we do a lot of homages to the classic serials of the day, which gave George Lucas the inspiration for Star Wars. And we've got the perfect character to drive us through this in Maul.”

The two-episode premiere of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord streams on 6th April only on Disney+.

The Force is with Star Wars Celebration Japan

Star Wars Celebration Japan is underway this weekend, and I'm living vicariously via friends' social media posts.

There are enough announcements for Star Wars fans (myself included) to fill a Corellian light freighter.

Sigourney Weaver (Alien) is joining the cast of The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), which is the first new Star Wars movie since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

And Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord from Lucasfilm Animation is coming to Disney+ with Sam Witwer reprising the iconic villain for animation. Darth Maul was seemingly killed by a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but returned in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Both stellar spin-offs drop in 2026.

The biggest surprise announcement so far is Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things). The upcoming standalone movie, which stars Ryan Gosling (Barbie), will be released in 2027. This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars.

Speaking at Star Wars Celebration Japan in Tokyo, Gosling said: "The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn."

In related news. Our friends at Hasbro have shared the latest product reveals for Star Wars: The Black Series and Star Wars: The Vintage Collection. Whilst collecting is a luxury during a cost of living crisis, I've pre-ordered the Bantha & Tusken Raider 2-Pack as part of Hasbro's return to Tatooine campaign in 2025. This set will pair with Luke's Landspeeder for toy photography.

Are you excited for The Mandalorian and Grogu, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord and Star Wars: Starfighter? Let me know in the comments below.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer on Nintendo Switch

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace may have divided fans decades before The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, but it spawned Darth Maul and podracing.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer was well received on the Nintendo 64 (I owned the Sega Dreamcast port) and it's coming back on Nintendo Switch later this year.

In related news from Nintendo Direct. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is available on the Nintendo eShop from today.

Are you excited to play Star Wars Episode I: Racer when it arrives on Switch? Let me know in the comments below.

See Darth Maul in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Ray Park reprised the role of fan-favourite Darth Maul for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I found out last June/July when we were in Guatemala,” Park recently told Forbes. “I got the phone call from Lynne Hale from Lucasfilm. And it was really nice of her, because she said to me ‘Ray, we’re just calling to see if you would like to do it.’ And I went [inhales slowly] ‘Yeah. Do you want me on the plane now?’”

Park's cameo, in director Ron Howard's prequel, is a highlight, and the fine folks at IGN have shared an exclusive clip to promote the home release this month.

Solo: A Star Wars Story was a relative box office failure for Disney. So much so, many fans (myself included) didn't bother seeing it at the cinema. However, I'll be renting it on Sky Store.

Darth Maul seeks revenge in Star Wars Rebels

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul duel in next Saturday's episode of Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD.

These guys have a history that stretches back to The Phantom Menace and their feud comes to an epic conclusion in Twin Suns. Maul has tracked Kenobi to Tatooine and is seemingly hellbent on revenge...

Star Wars fan film: Darth Maul: Apprentice

Star Wars fan films are always fun to watch and sometimes they go above and beyond. T7pro's Darth Maul: Apprentice, created by talented filmmakers from Germany, is one such example.

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace gave the franchise one of its most iconic villains and Shawn Bu decided Darth Maul deserved an enthralling encounter with Jedi. It's fair to say Bu and his talented cohorts delivered and then some in this 18-minute short film in 4K.

"We always felt that Darth Maul should have had more screen time," reads the YouTube video's biography. "So we wanted to create a film just for him with the best lightsaber fights we could do!"
